Has anyone ever done this train journey from Chicago to San Fran?
Its a 52 hour trip through some fantastic scenery like the Rockies,Sierra Nevadas and the Colorado river valley.I know its a long time stuck on a train and a flight would be cheaper and quicker but i just want to see some of the real America up close and not from 20,000ft in the sky.
I'm thinking of doing it in late Aug early Sept of 2014,Maybe 4 days in Chicago and the same in San Fran with the train journey in between and i'm just looking for some 1st hand advice on what to expect on board etc.
    Thanks in advance.
    T

I haven't done this journey but you should take a look at the website seat61.com ,the zephyr is listed there under great railway journeys and it has loads of information and pictures, actually seat61 makes me want to go everywhere by train!

Sheldon Cooper approves of this plan, everyone should want to go on a train.

I did it solo in late August / early Sept 2007 and couldn't recommend it highly enough - epic stuff.

It crosses 8 states, encompassing fertile plains, deserts, spectacular canyons and lakes, before traversing the Rockies and Sierra Nevada mountains. Cost €102.00 euros for a ticket (I did it on the cheap in a coach seat!), incredible value and a real adventure. If you're flexible, it may be worth hopping off for a night or two in different places, as small town America looks mightily appealing as you pull into little stations along the way.

Another great thing about the trip was the ability to socialise with a bunch of interesting & friendly folks, then easily retreat away to a book or simply stare out the window as the States slipped by.
