i have two queries i have noticed the last few days when i start the Car it takes a bit to start i have checked the battery with a volt meter you stick in the cigarette lighter which was reading at 14.5 ,

i have also noticed the last couple of days a noise that happens every so often one of the noises is like a grinding noise like as if something os very stiff can happen when i stop or staionary taking off?

the other noise feel like its coming from a wheel on the driver side has the effect of driving with your exhaust rubbing of the ground as you drive this happens every so often too when you hit the brake seems to go but then comes back as your driving ,

Just wondering would my brakes be rubbing metal to metal ?

its a Toyota Avensis 2000 lean burn model

    thaksk in advance guys

Sounds like your car needs service and brakes checked.

As you posted in diy pop the front wheel off and inspect disc and pads.

Front Disc and pads are cheap enough for avensis

14.5 volts is reading with engine running so your seeing the alternator charge voltage.

Better to check voltage before you start car.
    Should be over 12 volts.

No idea what the other grinding noise is.
You need to stick your head under the bonnet to try pin point the noise.

12.2 seems ok very slightly low but ok
If the engine is turning over slower than expected you could pop in to a garage, motor factors or halfards and ask them to test it.
They normally don't charge as they make their money from selling new batteries.

The slow starting is either weak battery engine turns over slowly then starts or needs service engine turns over at normal speed but takes a few turns of the engine to start.

I bought front pads from micksgarage for less than 20 euro and disc from local motor factors for 50 euro. ( disc where badly worn ) you might not need discs.

It reduced the grinding noise when braking at slow speed. The rear drum breaks also needed doing on mine I think the drum pads where 30 euro.

The air filter is a quick check and easy to replace.
If it needs a service do the oil air and fuel filter along with spark plugs. It will make it run much better. Check all fluid levels

They are a nicer car to work on than most and everything is strait forward.

leave the car sit overnight and test the battery in the morning before you start the car. This will give you the most accurate reading.
