    Hi all,

    Its been a year since I finished my BL and was called to the bar.

    At the moment I'm following a separate, more profitable, career path with a view to saving money for life at the bar. This is proving to be unfulfilling as ultimately I see myself at the bar.

    Quick queries -

    1. How many years do I have before I'm blocked from practising (If I was called in 2012, do I have until September 2015?)

    2. What would be the best way to lock down a Master now? (I would like someone established in Civil / Property)

    Thank you

    Didn't it take Binchy about 50?

    Law Library website and a lot of emailing.

    Thank you

    There is a time limit on it, 12 years rings a bell. Bepolite may be unaware of the precise implications related to the example he cites.

    Many academics in Trinity were/are also practicing at the Bar, had already devilled, etc. The law school changed its practices in around 2007, making it harder for academics to sustain active membership of the academy and practice (though some part timers did).

    The best route is to contact the Bar Council office. It used to be between 9 & 12 years (it could be less now).

    Sadly I picked a Saturday to begin to get my life together. I'm terribly nervous that it might be 3 years now.

    I'll give the Bar Council a bell the next time I feel I can deal with the realities of my dream..

    Everything seems very unsteady at moment with the Legal Services Bill and the cost of regulation being hotly debated..

    Had a glance at the rules of the membership of the Law Library. It states:
    The following persons shall be eligible to apply for
    membership of the Law Library, subject to such
    terms and conditions as may, from time to time, be
    prescribed by the Library Committee:-

    (i) Any person who has been called to the Bar of
    Ireland;

    (ii) A final year student in King’s Inns;

    [etc.]...

    I'm not aware if the Library Committee has placed a temporal limitation on the period since being called.

    Whenever suits, the bar council are flexible (not official bar council position). They are an equal opportunities service provider, which means they will take your money regardless of your colour, creed, or year of call.

    Get em while they're drunk, probably
