Probably because they're the main battle rifle of the US military and the quickest way to get to Sligo.

Because they look awesome. Nothing like an M4 with all the trimmings :)

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

I wonder this also, everyone seems to have one!

I love my g3 and much rather it to any m4/16 platform, luckily in airsoft my g3 shares it's internals with them :)

It is what ever you like not what anyone else likes.

Armalites are probaly the most widely produced variant you can buy, with loads of mags and accessories both cheap and expensive it is a very popular choice.

Lego is one of the most popular toys in the world. It earned that popularity by being something that can be built to the instructions, or something that you can build to your own ideas. Either way, the result is what you want it to be, regardless of how mundane or madcap your vision was.

M4s are basically the same thing. They are to the airsoft world, what lego is to the toy world: an infinitely customisable system. Parts are plentiful, designs are everything from basic to unfathomably odd, and - for the most part - the results are fairly unique to the user.
Personally, I love me a bullpup. F2000s, Tavors, AUGs... you name it. They all look like their various iterations, though. Very little room to "move in", and make it your own. Ditto the AKs, G36s, and MP5s that are so popular. They all work great, and there's a lover of every kind for reasons ranging from aesthetics to comfort, but on a sheer point of customisation, nothing comes within reach of the M4. That would be one of the main reasons it's so popular, and - like Lego - will remain so popular for a long time to come.

Definitely agree with you, I'm also a big bullpup fan myself!

I'm all about the individuality of your tool of choice. I have fired the m4, m16, 416, scar, fn 2000 and AK series in the real steel versions and still love the MP5 series. Therefore I buy what I love for airsoft. That and a dirty great EBR to scare myself with.

You have to look at the main market for airsoft to see why the M4 is so popular. America. That and it is midrange affordable and easily customisable. Therefore individual.

The M4 also seems to show up in every second shoot em up and action film.

perhaps the question should be "why are m4's so popular when they are not the best gun to start with for the purposes of performance and tuning"?

And which aeg would you give that honor to? Just wondering out of curiousity. I haven't really worked on much else than m4's and ar style aegs with the v2 gb.

    maybe not the utlimate best but definitely better than a m4 (IMHO) is the humble AK for the following reasons;

the hop up unit- bolted in place so the airseal is better between the hop up unit and gearbox, also because it is bolted in place shot to shot consistancy tends to be better, also the ak hop up adjuster is less prone to "creep" even with high ROF setups.

the ver 3 gearbox is externally wired- so the fitting of mofsets or thicker guage wiring is less troublesome and leaves more options, and because the wires are not as contained they can cool faster.

the ak makes use of a motor cage- leading to much better and stable motor allignment, with less end float of the motor the gearbox is a little quieter and the gears last a little longer.

not as many mag "issues"............ :)

the newer mid range Ak's are coming with proper steel (not pot metal) receivers.

plus, you can test a ver3 gearbox on the bench without having to reassymble the gun.

I had guessed it might be v3 gearbox, although I did wonder if you were a p90 fan. I'm not a big ak fan but I do know that they are good performers as some of my friends use them.

I wouldn't mind a nice ak74 setup (minimum accessories but most functionality) sometime but that's farther down the list of things I would like.

It's an AK, so your argument is immediately invalid.

Touché Lar, touché.. I do not like AK's but doubt few can argue with that.. although it appears Dex has made a compelling argument :p

While I do not like M4's, the AR platform offers the most choice of any currently available, so even I've a couple of non Delta ring AEG's that are pimped out to the nines, as they just work so well overall :)

(also, when not playing with guns, I still play with Lego from time to time, it's that good)

I'll take my SIG 551 over both M4s and AKs any day of the week
