I would go down to my local store but there is literally no sign of any deals! I wish they had been more structured with some of these sales.

Can it be used for netflix or any other streaming services?

I don't think I've ever managed to get one of these electrical bargains at tescos ever, it usually just ends in frustration for me!

It will allow a media hd through it. I have a NAS drive and it works very well. Also can access my S4 on it too.
    No, netflix

I was going to get one, but was not sure if it did DLNA, so i got a Panasonic for €10 more.

These boxes are not that great tbh.

A Raspberry Pi + Case and an SD Card, USB Charger and HDMI Cable you have lying around will do a much better job.

    Pi:

    Case:

Handles full 1080p without any problems with Openelec installed and theres a bunch of nice plugins easily loaded with xbmchub

    Installing OpenELEC:
    http://squirrelhosting.co.uk/hosting-blog/hosting-blog-info.php?id=9

    Installing XBMC Hub:
    http://www.xbmchub.com/blog/2012/04/24/fusion-easy-addon-installation-for-xbmc/

If you have a NAS on your network you can easily attach it to that, or use a powered USB Drive.

For a remote you can just use your phone (theres an official free app) or you can use the web interface.

True, but its limited to playing what Samsung wrote the firmware to play,Their track record also sucks with future support.

XBMC is open, has been around a really long time and will play just about any format you throw at it.

Plus it plays online content, such as 4OD, iPlayer etc etc. (As long as you are in the correct region of course)

    Not for Blu-Ray playback.

I'd disagree about the future support part. My Samsung blu ray player updated two nights ago. It is about 3 years old. I am sure at some stage it will become a legacy item but that is par for the course.

My TVs have had updates too and they are about 3 years old.

Bought one of these , predominantly for watching Netflix - bit unsure of whether I can or not , anyone know for sure ?
Also, how exactly do you connect to your broadband ? Do I need to buy a "lan adapter" ? , if so , wtf is a "lan adapter" ?!!
Sorry for all the questions! !

I was at tesco kildare (the one by kildare village today) there were two sony bdp-s185 for 30 euro. A good few toshiba ones for 35 and one samsung one (i'm guessing it is the same as the one mentioned by OP) for 40 if anyone is interested and happen to swing by there

The Sony S185 doesn't support Netflix, unfortunately. It supports it in the North American market but not Europe.

I picked up an LG BP125 for €20 in Naas yesterday. They still had a few Samsung and Philips units for €40 and a Panasonic for €50. Amazing value. Thanks OP!

    Hi,
Just wondering if this skifta app is a work around for playing Netflix on this ?
If so, where do you install it ? .... On the blu-ray player itself ? Do you have to have another device running Netflix on at the same time , eg laptop ?
    Thanks for any help

Install it on a smartphone (Apple/Windows/Android/ Sideload- BlackBerry) or PC, and you can send pretty much anything you view on your phone/PC to a DLNA device.
    http://www.skifta.com/
If you are sending from phone, you can still receive calls/texts without it interrupting your viewing.

Allcast is great too, but just became a paid App :( and is still buggy.. Best avoided at the minute..

Thanks for all the info - am i right in saying that the programme I'm watching through the blu-ray would have to be playing in tandem on my phone so ?
As in kids couldn't be browsing net or playing game on the phone at same time ?
    Apologies if that's a stupid question !
Also in relation to a wireless lan adaptor which I'm told I'll also need, do these differ in performance much (serious range of prices) ?
There's one in Argos for €20 - TP Link Mini N300 , seems to get good reviews. - Any thoughts on this ?
Again thanks for all the help!

No, you stream to the device from phone or PC, and can use phone or PC as normal.

What do you want WLAN adapter for? The Blu-Ray player? I don't think it'll be compatible with a USB WLAN device.

You could plug the ethernet cable directly into it, or if it is too far from the router, get homeplugs/powerline adapters.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

A lot of bluray players have a USB port for USB WiFi adapters.

You have to check which ones it supports though. I don't think the LG BP125 supports ethernet or USB WiFi though.

"What do you want WLAN adapter for? The Blu-Ray player? I don't think it'll be compatible with a USB WLAN device."

Box says Wireless Lan Ready on it , & was told that what what I needed to buy.
Sales assistant didn't seem too knowledgeable though - bit like myself !

What Blu-Ray Player is it? Is it this one? - http://m.samsung.com/uk/consumer/tv-audio-video/blu-ray-players/archive/2d/BD-E5300/XU
    Wireless LAN Built-in No
    Wireless LAN Ready No
    All Share (DLNA)Yes
    (DLNA Only)Wi-Fi Display No
    Wi-Fi Direct No

    http://www.samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00031755&fm_seq=31923
The BD-E5300, BD-D5100, and HT-E3500 are the only models that do not support any of the wireless adapters listed above, they support a wired LAN connection only.

    Hi,
Its the BD-D5300, so I think I'm OK.

Just need to decide which is best one to keep & other going to brother!

P.S - for anyone interested was in tesco naas 20 mins ago & they have a few left - a Philips 3D for €40, Toshiba for €45 and a few Panasonic for €50.

Yep, BD-D5300 can use WLAN adapter. I thought it was the model linked earlier in thread.

Some adapters will work, some won't - This thread may name a few that will - http://answers.argos.co.uk/answers/1493-en_gb/product/9368286/questions.htm

The official one is on Amazon
