Best way to repair this chunk out of wall (pic included)

    Depends what materials you have on hand; if it were me I would brush out the area and remove any loose plaster and dust before priming with a little PVA and water. Then I would fill the area with some gypsum bonding, scraping back so that the finish is a couple of mil below the surrounding wall. When dry I would fill with regular decorators filler, feathering it out . When dry, sand lightly and decorate. In the absence of bonding you could easily do the lot in decorators filler, although I would do this in two stages to avoid slump or shrinkage.
