Disney Infinity for Wii not working

My brother got this game on the wii there for Christmas. We got our wii a few years back, maybe the year after it came out, so it's an old enough console at this point. He got the starter pack and a few of the other packs from various relatives but when he went to play the game, the system wouldn't read the disk. We went away to do the system update but it said it was up to date. We checked again to be sure and it said it was grand. He still wasn't able to play the game.

I then read online somewhere that the older consoles have issues reading these new types of disks. Not wii u games since obviously they won't work, but just the newer wii games. So now my brother can't use any of the stuff he got for Christmas since none of it works, and the shops won't take things back because of them being opened. I find it disgraceful that Nintendo didn't say it anywhere that the games would have issues on older consoles because if that was the case, my parents would've gotten him something else (they were considering the wii u at one point).

Has anyone else had any issues with it for the wii?

Did you check if other discs will work on it? I had a wii from release date that stopped reading all discs last year, just old and needs a new disc reader. There's no difference between the newer games and older games with regards to whether they will work on an older console or not.

Other disks are working no problem at all. My brother plays it often enough and with different games, this is the only one that isn't working on it.

On this thread here someone mentions about dual layer disks, which is what I meant in the original post. I just don't know a whole pile about the console since I don't use it that much, it's my brother that does.

Stupid question : it's the Wii version, not the Wii U version, right?

Btw I have a release day Wii, it reads dual layer discs

    Tried cleaning it?

It's the Wii version, yeah. That was the first thing I checked when they told me it wasn't working. It wouldn't read the risk but maybe after about 5 tries it would work. He kept trying that for the few days since but it got fairly annoying having to put the disk in and out a load of times on the off chance it might work.

If you can try a copy of Smash Bros. Brawl, there was a problem with dual-layer discs and Brawl brought it to light.
Sounds like that might be it. Try and get a new disc from wherever it was bought, if that doesn't work have a talk with Nintendo, probably way past guarantee though.

I remember having one or two issues with brawl when we got it, but that was just the first day and it was perfect after that. That's why we thought this might sort itself. I know there's not much we can do now so we're just trying to return what we can, but I was curious as to whether or not it was an issue for more people since I know this is a fairly popular game this Christmas. And yeah, we tried cleaning it and everything to see would it work. Thanks for the responses anyway :)
