Freeview and Saorview

    Hi

Quick question I have a Sony KDL-40EX503 tv, which is branded as having Freeview HD built in, which in theory means I should get the UK free channels. I have my ariel plugged into it and am currently able to get all of the Saorview channels. I can not seem to figure how though to connect my satellite feed to receive the free view channels any help or suggestions...

As far as I can tell, that TV does not have a satellite tuner built-in. So, unless you live close to the border you are only going to get Saorview on it via your aerial.

I think you are confusing Freeview / Free to view / Freesat. All mean different things.

Freeview is the UK terrestrial service, not satellite. That TV does not have a satellite tuner.

Freeview is only broadcast in the UK and is picked up with an aerial.
You would only be able to receive it if you are in Northern Ireland or close to the border.

Freeview is receivable from Wales, in areas nowhere near the NI border. Kilkenny would be pushing it a bit, although there was a reception report here a couple of weeks ago.

Ariel is washing powder and won't work.

Can all of the east coast get Freeview? I can get it (patchy at times apart from BBC1,2,UTV,C4,C5 usually excellent) and so can all my friends, I presume the NI signal reaches as far south as Dublin and the Wales signal kicks in from Dublin to Wexford? Ive even accidently picked up the welsh signal at times during the summer but that doesnt last too long.

As far as ROI reception is concerned, I would be pretty sure that it's only in some areas close to the NI border that Freeview matches satellite for reliability.

Digital transmissions fool people into thinking they have an 'excellent' signal & a sense of entitlement develops. In reality, the receiver can be operating just above its decoding threshold & it only takes a further small degradation of signal for sudden & complete failure. In places outside the protected service areas of the Freeview transmitters, the signal is likely to be degraded by interference on a regular basis.

Anyone else lost all their Freeview channels? I'm in Rush in a North Dublin and up until now have had them with the odd drop out on the SD channels, but this morning everything was gone, including the HD channels.

I made the mistake of doing an auto rescan nod now don't even have the channels with no signal, just the Saorview channels and nothing else.

Same here - all Freeview channels are gone for us, Fingal area in North Dublin. (Kilkeel transmitter)
