    Hi folks,

This is my first time in this section so feel free to point me in the right direction if I'm not in the proper place.

I have this old pc at home:

I have previously replaced the hard drive a few years ago when it failed, but now the hard drive is again on it's last legs. Is it worth replacing the hard drive again, or should this machine just be sent to the scrap heap? I tried to find a compatible SSD for it, but Crucial don't have anything for it and I presume other manufacturers would be the same. Would it be possible to put the HDD from my Lenovo laptop into this PC and upgrade the laptop to a SSD?

I have 2GB RAM installed on the PC, this is the max it can take.

    Thanks,,

If the system functions as you want it to why not just replace the Hard drive ?

You could buid a new PC for around 200 that would be 5 times stronger. Its definitly not worth putting any more money into it.
If the PC is just for general browsing office work etc then the below would be perfect with an SSD for extra speed

    Item|Price
    Intel Celeron Dual-Core G1610 Box , LGA1155|€32.78
    ASRock H61M-VG4, Sockel 1155, mATX|€34.64
    4GB G.Skill PC3-12800U CL11-11-11-28|€32.90
Cooltek X1, Midi Tower, ATX, schwarz, ohne Netzteil|€20.80
    Corsair VS Serie VS350, Non-Modular, 80+|€29.42
    SanDisk SSD 64GB 6,4cm S-ATA 600|€49.19
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€218.72

You can add a Sata PCI card that would work with any drive, including the one from your laptop.

I wouldn't spend too much on that machine though.
Do you have an OS for it and the laptop?

Thanks for the info folks. I do have an OS for it (win7) and may go down the route of the new build. All I use this machine for is home use, web browsing, some photo editing (Lightroom 4) although I don't store photos on it, I have them on two external drives. I guessed it may have been getting a bit old for upgrading.

At very best you want minimum 3 years from upgrade. To upgrade what you have would cost 200 euro. With upgrade you would probably install win 8 also as win 7 life span runs out. Win 8 is good os so far in resilience but is only touch screen friendly imho. Your upgrade will be outdated by 6 months as solid state drives take over and newer tech takes over as it does. What I say is spend on your hd again and no more. So if it takes 200 milliseconds extra to open a program or 1 minute extra to copy 10 gb will that really matter. Save your money now and In 3 to 5 years you could be buying google glasses ;)

Fixing the PC only costs him the cost of PCI Sata card and a Hard drive.
If he upgrades his laptop with a SSD he can move the old hard drive to the PC with a 3.5 to 2.5 bracket.
The SSD he can reuse in any new Laptop/PC you get in the future.
Dunno what Windows 8 has to do with the thread but you can turn off Metro so it looks and works the same as Windows 7.

If you had the budget I do what batman88 suggested. Lightroom 4 is a bit of a slow program so really needs a fast CPU. So upgrade that as the budget allows. It must be painful on your current PC.

It is painful at the moment, so slow I rarely use it, but rather than just have it sitting there I would rather fix it up and be able to use it. Hence the idea of replacing the drive in the laptop with an SSD which is newer and has more RAM and a dual core processor, if I could then use the sata HDD from that in the desktop.

I think you should just use laptop for everything. After looking up the processor in the PC I doubt it would even play YouTube videos comforatbly or could do much with it. It's a very old processor. I don't think you would even get 30 euro for the whole PC
