Sounds likes an issue with audio driver. Quick restart will propably do it.

If not, go to device manager and check your audio driver in the list. When you click on it, an option to update should show. If not, Google the name of the audio driver, and download/install.

On my phone so can't give better/complete advice, and it's 2 in morning here, but if still not resolved tomorrow I'll get back to you.

Tired that but does not have that option. Also restart was no good.

Tried google and many pointed to the device manger but I dont seem to have those options

What exact computer(model number) do you have and then we can find your audio driver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,477 ✭✭✭✭Knex*

Just a quick post before I'm off. Like I said though, I'll check on this again tomorrow.

Did you have earphones/speakers plugged in when you restarted? Sometimes putting in headphones etc before laptop boots fully throws the driver.

If so, and rebooting again, do a cold restart - turn it fully off, then boot it again after a few seconds.

If wondering about model, system info will give you what we need.

I'll ping you a link to a driver tomorrow, if someone hasn't done so before, and a few instructions on how to go about it. Simple enough really. Shame I'm away in a diff time zone and on the ol phone, or I could have it sorted sooner for ya.

Edit: just seen above. Should only need audio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,381 ✭✭✭✭Allyall

You just download the audio driver.

    EDIT.

Also, have you tried pressing FN + F3 together?

    I downloaded it there.

It is saved into file called Audio. Is there something else I have to do after this?

You have to run it/install. Did you just simply download it?

If so, what file extension is it? If exe, just run it away like any setup file and follow the prompts.

I clicked "open with" and it just saved it onto file. It gave no option to run it for me.

    Sorry bit of noob here

Can you go to that audio folder it's in now and see if you can double click on it and make it run setup?

If not, right click on file, go to properties, and tell us the extension, .exe, .zip, or .rar etc.

Cool. Right click on it and hit run as administrator.

Follow the setup guide, which when done should force restart, and Bob's your uncle. Hopefully!

You see when I click on Audio it brings me into load of other files. I just tried to download one with the Audio signal and then the startup. Startup told me to restart and no cigar.

I will try few others and see if they work

hold on, i'll download it and see what you need to do.

Edit: i'm on >.5mb internet so you'll have to bear with me.

    no that should be it.
I'm not really up to date on Vista, was a bit before my time at computers but i'll try to help.

Ok we'll try and get you into device manager, this is really where we should have started.

Open control panel, which is got from the start menu.
Click on the System and Maintenance.
in here the device manager should be around the middle/bottom.

Have a look for your audio device, does it have a yellow exclamation mark on it?

i can't really think of anything that could cause an issue like this, did your audio work before?

can you try this? should be very similar to Vista i'd imagine.

what drivers can you see in device manager at present?

A system restore is another option we could look at, its pretty easy as long as you haven't installed anything since yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,381 ✭✭✭✭Allyall

Sorry, relatives called to collect presents.

It could be that Vista SP has altered something, although it would unusual at this stage, it is possible.
Another thing to try is do system restore. Instructions here. Choose a time before the problems started.

Do you have any CD's? Do you have a USB stick?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,485 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

cheers for help. Very much appreciate yer efforts.

I have to head out but will check it in morning and get back to ye.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭RossieMan

I'd go the system restore route, its the easiest and probably has the best chance at fixing the problem.

There are a couple of things you could do before you decide to pay a shop to do them for you.

Mainly - Backup any data you need to keep and do a factory reset.
    Scroll Down - http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/6552.htm

That's should fix nearly all problems (It won't fix viruses).

You could download Ubuntu - http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
Install it onto a USB key and run it, check if Audio is working there.

Last resort, you may need to buy ONE OF THESE

And if you wanted, you could have a go at installing it yourself - http://repair4laptop.org/disassembly_advent.html

Just read up a small bit, now that I have a laptop in front of me.

Could you perhaps try this driver before you do any of the above, as if it works its the easiest option.

    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#1

Tick accept when prompted on that link, then pick UK1 as the download link for the first driver on the list, 32bits Vista, Windows7 Driver only.

Also, could you type msinfo32.exe either into a cmd prompt, or just in the start menu. This will bring up your system info, and from there could you tell me what service pack you are on? This is found beside the "Version" label.

Edit: Also, is there a red/white X over the audio symbol icon in the taskbar, or is it as normal?

Hey knex I will give this a go in short while. Was on phone earlier and will try it soon. Cheers.

Tried to install SP2 but no cigar.

    Lads ye been great help.

    Honestly.

Its probably something I have missed or overlooked. I maybe retry few things in meantime and see if they work out.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,381 ✭✭✭✭Allyall

I would get SP2 first. Download manually instead of trying to update.

    If you have 32 Bit - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16468

    64 Bit - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17669
