Does anyone know of a garage in Dublin that'd be open today, Friday 27th December? I need an urgent estimate of the cost to repair two doors which were scraped quite badly on xmas day - don't need the work done so urgently, but need to know a ballpark figure of how much repairs will cost, prior to meeting the guy who hit us this afternoon. Can anyone help?

I wouldn't recommend allowing yourself to be pushed into getting a repair quote under such conditions without a very good reason. If you don't mind my asking, what's the rush?

    We're in D7.

Just wanted to have a vague idea of what the costs might be prior to meeting the guy who hit us, sounds like he wants to do a cash deal, don't think he was meant to be driving his work van on Xmas day.

Any suggestions on how to handle this avo's conversation?!

First step is to report all the details to your insurance company - you have to do this, whether you're claiming or not. Tell him that you'll get a repair quote when businesses reopen - at that point give him the option of paying you directly or letting the insurance deal with it. It's important to make sure that you're covered from the start - a lot of people initially promise to pay and then become increasingly difficult when they see the bill.

Thx for the advice so far. It's actually my mother's car that was hit, and she's convinced (her sister told her) that even though the damage was clearly caused by someone else and it'll be his insurer (or his back pocket) that pays for it, that if she reports it to her insurers they'll put her premium up.

She knows her NCB shouldn't be hit since damage caused by someone else; could this be true, that her annual premium will likely go up if this goes through insurance channels?

Also, what if this guy's insurance doesn't cover him? He's suggested it's a work van which he shouldn't have been driving on a non-work day.

This is not true. Her insurance won't be affected unless she claims on her own policy.

It doesn't matter whose fault it was, what matters is whose insurance is claimed against.

It probably will, but for her own sake your mother needs to give her own insurer full details of the incident now.

Insurance wise I would imagine he's covered, policies don't usually specify time it can be used but his boss may be implementing a rule that it can't be used for personal use.

Get a quote, if he pays up then great, if not claim his insurance. Report it to your insurer, it won't affect your NCD

Even if his policy has stipulations which mean he shouldnt have been driving at the time, his insurer still cannot refuse to pay out the third party portion of the claim. His dealings with his insurer are his own business; you report it and let him worry about himself.
