€85.64 if you pay in sterling and don't use Amazons crazy exchange rate.

Will this work on 02 pre-pay and pay as you go?

Sorry if that's a silly question, i've just heard that 'sim-free' and 'unlocked' are used interchangeably and aren't exactly the same.

Want to know before I buy it for my mum's birthday.

    Cheers!

How do you force it to pay in sterling instead?

Is that not for old Nokia phones? Are you sure it applies to Lumias?
Also, how do you get the unlock code?

Without unlock code, you are tied and branded to Vodafone on that one.
    Also
    https://www.spotify.com/ie/
Spotify is now free on mobile, tablet and computer. Listen to the right music, wherever you are.

It may not be premium, but Premium is currently available for 3 months, for the price of 1.

Vodafone offer is good if you are on Vodafone, but not so much if you're not.

Not a bargain? How much to spend before you get free unlock code, how much to privately unlock. The immediate option to swap provider.

    Hmm yeah I get ya..

    Not a bargain alert imo.

It'll take north of €100 in top-ups to be granted an unlock code from VF themselves & €30 or so to do same via ebay.

Add in Amazon's customer service versus that of Vodafone & I'd happily forego the Spotify & Data enticements to pick up a Sim free unlocked handset from Amazon.

This constitutes a BA any day of the week.

stick in a three all you can eat data 20euro per month sim and your laughing.

Vodafone are terrible when it comes to data.

    so yes its a BA

I've seen advice like this before. To be honest I use Amazon's rate as Ulster Bank add on fees for paying in non-Euro currency on my debit card so I think it just works out the same in the end.

Do you guys not have that problem? I am unsure whether all banks charge such fees.

For sim free its a great price. Even if you saved €20 by purchasing it on a network I would still go the sim free option.

Windows devices forum for lumia info if needed

Sometimes it does work out better, also depending on how you are paying.

Sometimes Amazons exchange is so high, it's better to pay in GBP. This one isn't one of very high, although it does work out slightly better to pay in GBP.

I always find paying in GBP is better value than Amazons exchange. Make note of the EURO price they offer you, then pay in GBP and see what the final amount is on your bank account. Great way to see the difference and you will find its better to pay direct.

N.B. you can lose out on refunds though, especially for large amounts if you pay GBP and the rate changes in the time you go to return it. So if large amount, with a high chance of refund, pay EURO. :)

The only point I'd make on this phone is maybe skip if you're gonna be wanting latest games on it. I think the 820/920 have twice the RAM and I often see newer games that require the higher amount of memory and won't run on a 520. Yes I'm aware those phones cost more and not everyone is into games, but best be aware!

    Can you be more specific?

No! It was a general observation from reading WP Central on a daily basis over the past couple of months. The article you referenced is 5 months old bear in mind. I frequently find when reading articles about new games coming out that people with 512MB phones can't play them. I didn't just make this up for the sake of it! :) I'm sure if you google it you'll see some examples.

It was true initially but they updated all the most popular games to run on the 520. (it would be madness for a developer not to as it the biggest selling Windows Phone) I don't know of any that don't run. Games not running on 512mb has become a bit of a soundbite but I don't think its accurate anymore. I don't know of any games that don't run. I'm just curious do you know any so I can try them.

Nope, afraid I'm no help to you. I just scan comments on WPCentral articles each time I read them, and there's a general theme I've noticed I've people moaning about things not working on their devices sometimes due to memory. I don't have a 520 so have no direct experience. At a guess I'd assume they're talking about recent titles. GTA IV is due out any day now so maybe use that as an example? I know that's only one, but again I'm just summarising my general experience from what I've read.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

With respect thats not experience that's repeating third hand information which may not be true. There's incorrect info in those comments, on WPCentral. A few games came out requiring 1GB of ram, were subsequently updated to run with 512mb of ram. So it may take a little longer for the latest title to make it to the 512mb phones, 520, 620, 720, 625. Curiously enough the 625 just released has 512mb, but the 520 replacement (not out yet) is rumoured to have 1GB.

Anyway we're going off topic for bargain alerts. The 520 is a (decent) budget windows phone, but you have accept some limitations. I suspect the 512mb maybe an issue in 6 to 12month when the 1GB devices have a greater market share than they do now.

Terrible phone, no flash on an already terrible camera with a half baked os. Not worth the bargain. Missus had one, got rid of it after two months, apps are useless. It's cheap for a reason imo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

Well all of that is true. But its a bit harsh.

The Camera isn't a patch on my old Samsung Ace II (which was great) But its just about passable in good light. The OS is missing some basic features. But then it has some features Android doesn't have. Theres less apps and I'd have to agree on average they are worse than android. A few are better though. But the OS is vastly faster than an low/mid range android. I hated the lag and pauses in all the Android phones I had. The screen is much more responsive (you can use it with gloves) than all the low/mid android phones I've used. No 3G needed for sat nav. You could go on about pros and cons all day.

Its less featured than android, but as a result simpler. You either want that or you don't.

For the price it's good, as regards to apps, localised apps is the problem here. For someone moving up a notch for an older os such as symbian etc it's a good phone for the money, you can argue that Android has more functionality and apps, but droids in the price range are as laggy, there is no good cheap phone as an all rounder in the price bracket, each has its pro's and cons.

yeah good point on laggy mid to lower range android, used to do my head in killing apps and clearing ram the whole time. I had a terrible motorola android phone that used to hang the whole time & I used to hear people in my pocket saying "hello, hello?" about five minutes after I tried to call them. With the windows os what infuriates me most is Spotify which is unusable due to constant crashing, also the lack of decent browser choice...surely getting text to auto fit the screen when you zoom in is a minimal expectation at this stage...head wrecking.

    Mine arrived today.

Set it all up and ready to go for my mum when she gets home from work.

Just waiting on my mini-sim arriving and it'll be all gucci.

It's a nice piece of kit for the price.

Only downside i've found is that the apps aren't the best and the phone slips out of your hand quite a bit if you're lying down with it (maybe that's just me).

Otherwise it's excellent and i'm very impressed.

    Cheers OP!
