I, too, would be interested to hear how anyone from Ireland got on with a Commando Spirit Event. Looks like great fun, if I was forty years younger. The 'Survive the Yomp; is no picnic, either, and you'll have to be VERY fit to complete it, even though you'll only be carrying less than half the usual back load - I think that you only get about 35kg or so, and, of course, no live ammunition or mortar bombs...you don't have to kill anyone either. The scenery on the Yomp is amazing, and was the setting for the original commando training by Lord Lovatt's ghillies back in WW2.

BTW, there ARE Irishmen in the RM as other ranks, but no officers.

There are a brace of RN officers who have Irish nationality, can't imagine why there are no RM ones unless it is cyclical.

Yes, but not on nuclear boats.

No furriners are allowed under the nationality rules to be officers in the RM. It's not cyclical, it's permanent. Read the nationality qualifying rules on the RM website.

'British or British dual citizenship. Nationality restrictions may apply for certain specialist jobs.'

    From the Royal Marines website.

Aye tac, they must have come from the ranks, as a backdoor, possibly. I've met these lads in a mess, I've no reason to doubt them.

No doubts about it, just reading the rules. Probably the restrictions apply to non-British officers not being allowed to be part of SF, as in SBS.

I wondered about this when I watched "The Silent War" recently on BBC.

One of the contributors - Frank Garvey - was an engineering officer on an RN boat that struck a Soviet sub (or some ice, depending on whether you believe the MoD).......but he had quite a strong 'brogue.'

I think it may have been a missile boat he served on, but I stand to be corrected. By all accounts they seem to have come quite close to losing her.

After being resident in the UK for a set amount of time, it is possible to apply to be a UK citizen, and as such those born overseas can become RM officers, as discus mentioned its a through the ranks job.

Yes, but remember that you might have to renounce all claim to Irish citizenship. Rules change, as I'm sure you know.

However, you are not yet in the UK, let alone joined the Royal Marines [allow at least a year for that] and residency takes at least five years. Remember too, that any time over 28 days outside the UK for ANY reason counts against you in the time-count, and RM onboard ship can be away from UK for months on end....

I'm sure you'll sort it out, but I can't help you out, just respond to your questions if I can - rules of the forum, and the law of the RoI.

I'm surprised that time outside the UK when serving is considered against you. It makes sense of course, but seems harsh considering you're away serving at the behest of the UK rather than just fancying an extra long holiday somewhere else.

Hey-ho; you learn something new every day!

IF you are trying to obtain UK nationality by reason of residency, the reasons why you are out of the country are moot. You are plainly NOT residing in the UK, no matter whether you are cushing it up on a floating grey gin palace, or picking leeches off your bum in a jungle.

    Not there - not counted.

    Simples.

They dont, nor do they apply to ranks.

There are Irish and commonwealth officers serving in UK SF.

Dear mr cruasder777 [sic] - since it appears that you already know ALL the answers, why do you insist on p1ssing [almost] everybody off by continually asking questions?

Just correcting your inaccurate posts, I know Irish serve in UK SF, I have drank with them in the Special Forces club in Herbert Sq, Knightsbridge.
