so i just finnished watching the sequel to 2001 "2010: the year we make contact"
some of the mystery was kind of ruined in that film, but overall theres still alot to play on

now i havent read the books, i know there is a sequel called 2061 (no spoilers please) but any chance of it becoming a movie? id prefer to watch it before reading it. in the late 80's apparently tom hanks wanted to direct it but any advancements since then? real pity to let such a cult classic to just stay unfinished.

2001 was a revolutionary movie when it came out.
Every sci-fi movie that followed has copied it slavishly.
If you watch Alien again it borrows heavily from Kubrick's movie - a malevolent computer, airlocks, space walks, hypersleep, massive spaceship with long corridors and humming computer terminals, crew millions of miles from home in the loneliness of space, fear of the unknown etc.
Sunshine (2007) copied many of the basic elements once again as did Moon (2009).
If there is going to be a sequel a filmmaker will have come up with something new or what is the point?

Actually Clarke wrote two further sequels 2061, which brings Halleys Comet into the mix and 3001: A Final Odyssey where Frank Poole, yes that Frank Poole comes back.

Its maybe 16 or 17 years since I read the sequels, 2010 is quite enjoyable and a pretty solid film.

But as for 2061 and 3001, you might be best ignoring them. I cant imagine anyone making a movie from them. There pretty poor.
