Is the Indo now €2.00 each weekday.

Will the extra revenue compensate for the loss of sales.

To buy the indo each day now costs over €750 per year. Steep.

    365 days
    Less 52 Sundays
    313 Mon-Sat

    313 Mon-Sat of which
    52 are Sat, and
    261 are Mon-Fri

    261x€2.00=. €522 Mon-Fri and
    52x€2.30=. €119.60

€641.60 per annum for 313 editions

One non publishing day(Christmas Day), 312

Same as Irish Times price and Examiner is due to increase next week.

On the other hand, news gathering and publishing is an expensive business, journalists and the editorial team can hardly be expected to work without adequate salaries, nor can all of the other components that make up the Daily paper.
Ireland is a very small country with 19000 km of roads to be travelled each morning to bring the printed copies to every corner of the country.
Unless we as a country wish to rely upon UK owned media to provide Irish news we will always pay substantially more for our own home produced papers.

This time last year, the Irish Times increased their cover price. Since then, the Irish Times suffered one of the larger circulation drops in H1 2013. It will be interesting to see if the Indo circulation drops, by a relatively larger amount, in H1 2014.

Newspapers seem to be all following the same vicious circle:
    Circulation drops.
Staff cut to compensate for lost revenue.
Cover price increased to compensate for lost revenue.
    Quality drops, readers drop.
    Repeat cycle.

Going on their last audited figure the revenue – at the till and not what the paper nets - would be €77,783,264 as opposed to €74,634,144 about 4%. However, their last ABC circulation audit showed that their sales had fallen 3.9% year on year. So effectively that’s running to stand still

The real ball breaker here is that the Indo has now hit a price point. Their next increase would be to €2.10 perhaps, which is very messy.

We may have reached a physiological pricing barrier that will be difficult to break. Perhaps, the next step, will be to hike the Saturday price to 2.50 EUR.

Remember that about 20% of circulation is made up of bulks.

12% - but still would have to be taken into account

My understanding is that bulks account for about 17% of Indo circulation, and a little bit less for the IT.

Irish Times, Sunday Business Post circulation down 30% since 2006|Finfacts

I'm willing to accept that you're right. Can you explain the 17% figure given in the above article. Thanks

I wouldn't buy that rag even if it was only 1cent

It’s actually incorrect, technically. There were 101,804 copies of the paper sold at full cover price. But then we get into semantics. Technically ‘bulks’ are a specific category:

Bulks, papers yielding less than 50% of basic Cover price (BCP) made up 14,992 copies.

There were also 3,822 sold at below basic cover price - anything from 99.99% of the cover price to 50% of it are covered in the Below BCP **

    Overseas sales were 502.

I specifically took the ABC technical category of bulks (14,992). Finfacts have (for whatever reason) used Bulks, the Below BCP and Overseas sales (14,992+3,822+502) to come up with that figure and get 17%

So, they are saying that an Indo sold in Spain is a ‘bulk’ or a “free issue” which it’s not.

**This category is not ‘free’ or a giveaway. Papers, for example, sold in Colleges etc at ‘student rates’ would fall into this category because they are below the basic cover price (but no below 50% of it)

Bought it once for the aldi vouchers, the rest of the paper was not fit for recycled toilet paper

    Price increases all round.

Herald has gone to €1.20 from €1.00
    Examiner is now €2.00
    Star is €1.50.

The downward spiral of sales and advertising will gather pace.

Why not try and sell a compact newspaper like the i in Britain at say 50 or 70c all many people want is a 30 minute read that gives the national news. The Metro is free for a reason, not worth buying.

I think the Star at €1.50 is very risky. Its rivals stayed at €1. I don't see them that much of a 'premium product'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,557 ✭✭✭JTMan

The only reason the Herald kept circulation somewhat stable in recent years was the 1.00 EUR price tag. The 10% price increase will hit circulation.

The star is a shocking paper.
