Anyone recommend a decent car for motorway driving. Will be doing 400KM a week. Max tax would be 700 I would be looking for.

Was thing of Mondeo. What are these like reliability wise?

Go for a Vag based motor. Skoda and seat for cheap luxury driving ! Just make sure your timing belts are changed and you will never have bother

I'd be looking at vag 1.9 TDIs too, or a Rover 75

I never had anything but bother with my 1.9 TDI 'VAG'

But you'd kill anything to be fair:p

Also Seat and Skoda for luxury driving...lol...no they ain't. And I've covered over 200k in them.

I'd look at a petrol accord or mazda 6. Diesel VAG cars are always dear enough for a good one.

You would get a really nice petrol Mondeo for that money. I had one and liked it a lot. However it was very hard on fuel. Approx 30 mpg.

I now have a Skoda Octavia tdi. Nice car but not as comfy as the mondeo or nice to drive.

    It depends on priority.

I am doing about 700k per week so the Octavia is a better choice ATM.

In a similar situation to yourself op, I'm looking at mondeos, lancers, accords, passats, avensis...maybe a bmw 320

Very hard to separate them but I'm thinking a mondeo is the way to go. Trying to keep my eye out for a decent titanium spec one.

if I was buying a diesel car for 5k in the morning it would be a 1.9tdi vag. My parents octavia 05 new model has caused zero trouble and there is 200k km on it now. they have it 18 months. Flew through the nct passed first time. Im sure you'd easily get a new model octavia for under the 5k. Id possibly look at the 1.7cdti astra too.

+1 on the Octavia, brilliant cars in 1.9tdi form as far as reliability is concerned. imo the 1.7 cdti doesn't hold a candle to them.

Vag would be skoda/seat/vw/audi so you're talking Golf, Leon, Altea, Octavia. Toledo, Superb, A3, A4, Passat, Bora etc.

Might get this close to your budget:

140bhp, good on fuel, roomy and very little goes wrong with them.

I get 42mpg average on mine, which is decent for a 1.8 petrol driven not that slow.

They aren't regarded as a good car
Ive very limited experience as only drove one for a week and it didn't inspire me in anyway to want one. Its for sale a long time and I guess seller would be delighted with 3k offer but I think there is better models out there like ford mondeo that could be bought for 3k

No they are not very good cars at all. I'd be avoiding a primera tbh.

You will pay thousands more for the privalage of saving a few hundred quid on tax though. For 5k I don't think you will get any decent 08+ car in a low tax bracket.

I've driven a few fords since 07 and I'd have to say i have found them all reliable. The diesels (07 focus 1.6 and 06 s-max 2.0) are lively and handle very well, and good on fuel. I've a 04 mondeo 1.8 petrol which is a nice cruiser but poor on gas and not great pick-up

I'd go for anything but the 1.6 PSA Diesel.

If the 1.6 HDI in my Sisters 308 HDI is anything to go by then best avoid it as it's rough and geared wrong. For instance, have to be in 3rd where you should be in 4th so it's under geared in 3rd and over geared in 4th and 5th isn't tall enough. I hate it.

I really don't like the PSA HDI, maybe the newer ones are smoother, maybe not. But my sisters is an 2008.

I don't like the power range either it's far too narrow a power band.

As always I highly recommend a prius, they are known to go for well over 300,000 miles with very little trouble, only 1 belt for the water pump in the MK II 2004-09. No belts in the MK III

My average is 60-64 mpg, it does drop a bit in winter. Not bad for a petrol automatic. Decent sized car.

5k should get you a MK II with about 90,000 odd miles.
