Any chance of fishing it out? I wouldn't fancy that.

If the tinfoil is big enough to be caught in the oil pick-up strainer you should be OK. It's not an ideal situation but you might get away with it.

i wouldnt fancy it either..if it was me id probably drive on and keep my fingers crossed but by rights you should probably drain the oil and hope it comes out the sump plug and if it doesnt drop the sump altogether. Id be worried that it would block the oil pump or one of the oil feed lines but in saying all that you could be fine. :( Try draining the oil and take it from there..

If car is an old banger I'd be driving and praying. If I had any value in the car I'd try to get it out, preferably before starting car at all.
Get more oil and pour in while using a strainer to strain the exit oil.
If the oil pan was perfectly clean to start with the exit oil can be reused once the foil is removed.

    What car is it?
How big was the foil bit?

if it was fairly big piece and depending on the particular engine it could have landed on the cam cover gasket and be doing not much harm at all.

... and be doing not much harm at all.

I agree, the plastic dip-stick broke on a 307 here and a piece about 4 to 6 inches long went into the sump. It's been rolling around there for over a year with no problem.

As for worries about the oil pump etc., the tinfoil can't get to the pump without passing through the pick-up strainer.

If you take the rocker cover off it should be sitting there. It would be too big to get to the sump through the return passageways as there only about 1 cm wide.

Agreed wheel nut but depends what kind of car, engine, and size of foil :)

4 nuts and the oil breather pipe is all that you need to take the cam cover off.
I'd do it for the peace of mind and the half hour it would take.
