01+ Opel Corsa 1.2 Auto - Opinions?

    Afternoon all,

So I'm checking out a cheap runaround (not for me.. like my A6 too much :)), and these seem to tick all the boxes:

    - cheap (€2.5k or less)
    - small engined (low daily running costs/tax)
    - 4/5 door hatchback
    - auto gearbox (must have)
    - doesn't look like a cut-down people carrier :P

But what are they REALLY like? Are the auto boxes in them any good? Any major issues to be aware of? Any better alternatives that fit the above criteria?

    Cheers!

Do yourself a favour, buy something else. Get a Micra or something.

We have a auto micra 03 as a runaround. Very reliable in the 2 years we have it. Awful to drive on a long spin but grand around time. I don't drive it often but herself loves it. Autos more expensive than manuals though.

Opel are known for headgasket trouble!

Agree with both above posters, get a micra or summit!

Doesn't like Micras I'm afraid. Anything else? Honda Jazz is also out which is a pity as it would have made a good choice too I thought

Automatic Yaris/Jazz/Micra are the most reliable ones in this class. That era of Opel corsa 1.2 autos should have single clutch automated manual gearbox(called easytronic I guess). I wouldn't buy one at that age for reliability concern. It is not a great car in general.

Small auto superminis are rare and fetch good money. I think you will struggle to find a good one for under €2500.

Not sure if the Daihatsu Sirion is full auto or CVT but it uses the Yaris running gear.

Not exactly good when they were brand new but it might tick the box for you, no worse than a Corsa and probably more reliable at this age:

    Or a Suzuki Ignis:

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yaris might be an option. What about Polos or Golfs of that era? (though preferably the engine size should be 1.4 or less)

Cheers Baz. Few more options there. Has to be a 4/5 door though.

Don't think the Golf came is anything smaller than 1.6 litre in auto form, Polo was 1.4 litre afaik.

Hmm.. if I bump the price up a bit to 3k it opens up Cordobas and Astras .. I know the former is probably ok, but is the latter as bad as the Corsa?

If you have €3k then I'd go for the Jazz. Most Jazz autos are Jap imports and called the Fizz, very reliable though:

If it was me I'd agree as I've had experience with them before and they're great little cars and very roomy for the size so it'd do nicely.. but alas it looks too much like a people carrier I'm told so it's out :(
