what are sold as galway sheep these days are half the size they were 35 years ago.
they were big wooly sheep with low prolificacy,
crossed with the suffolk produced a massive fat lump
and not as hardy as the suffolk cheviot cross.
in the 1800s galway rams were brought to wales
    and developed into the lleyn.
and ironicly lleyns were used to develop the galway improver that eventually became the belclare.
would probably be extinct were it not for reps & aeos status.
they are a classic example of 'top' breeders failing to adapt to market requirements and putting style over function.
best thing that could have happened to them was a good shot of new zealand romney genetics.
