Nylon strings on a guitar with bronze strings?

Bought a Fender Squire acoustic guitar today from Argos for 104e. It's a present. However the person for whom it is for wants to learn classical guitar. Can I put nylon strings on the guitar so that it can be used for classical (basic research online says mostly not, but sometimes yes). I thought I should ask the good people of Boards.

Do I need to bring it back? Thanks for any help, I know it is Christmas Eve so I appreciate it!

You should bring it back and swap it for a classical guitar. This one will do for a beginner.

Those strings won't work for a steel string acoustic as the nylon strings are tied onto the bridge whereas steel strings are pegged in. Even if you manage to get them on somehow, the guitar is all wrong. It won't sound right and more importantly has a different width neck. If the person you are buying for wants to learn classical guitar, they really should have a classical guitar.

Classical guitars are classical guitars and you won't turn a non-classical guitar into a classical by simply adding nylon strings. There are other differences, for example the shape and proportions, a wider fret-board, different construction methods, different sound dynamics, different tail/bridge-piece and different tuning heads.

A student can learn on any guitar but a classical guitar teacher will probably require the correct instrument.

Yes. Bring it back. Nylon strings on a steel strung guitar just won't work. Won't do any harm, but won't work.

Look on the bright side. The other way round and the guitar would implode under the string tension!

Just had a quick scope of Argos classical guitars, btw. Just get your money back. Don't exchange for one of those. If they argue about it in the shop, use the following phrase. 'The guitar was not fit for purpose because the intonation was way off'. Use that phrase verbatim. Don't improvise or deviate! They probably won't know what you mean and won't be able to contradict you. If they do know what you mean, they won't be able to contradict you, as the statement will be true.

    :)

You can get ball end nylon strings that will fit the Fender but like others say, exchange it for a classical guitar if you can.
