Anyhone know what percentage of the vehicles on Irelands roads are winterised, ie, can go pretty much anywhere based on snow and ice or thereabouts based on their awd 4wd setup. I'm thinking myself less than 1%.

I'm goosed anyway. Not that bothered though as can work from home and my driveway is insurmountable if the weather's crap meaning I have an excuse:D

But I'd imagine last winter a lot of people got burned on this stuff expecting the worst and then getting mild enough weather. Has anyone been looking at 4wd cars over the last while and noticed any increase in prices?

I'm also goosed. Tyres on mine are poor in the wet in the summer, never mind cold and ice. Car simply will not leave the drive if things freeze over.

My A6 is a Quattro with decent tyres on it so I should be ok - the bad winter of 2010 (when I did a commute from the wilds of Cavan to Dublin every day in my last Passat) taught me a lot. Was -14 one morning according to the temp gauge.

I have booked the next week off anyway but can work from home too if needed. Have a bit of a spin tonight but aside from that I won't be going too far till later in the week.

(Oh and have a great Christmas guys, but be safe if you are out and about :))

of mine, I'll only be taking the carina out if it is anyway icy.

535 & truck are both large engined and torquey and RWD. Fun to drive around in the ice but only in a large flat space not on a main road!

Winter tyres count for a lot more than awd when it gets slippy out.

    On Ice AWD does nothing.

FWD and I have snow socks in the boot. Better than nothing I suppose. I had winter tyres last year but the ride is bad enough on all seasons, on winters it was awful.

That's weird, I've generally found cars to ride a bit better (albeit a bit more noisily) on winter tyres.

Not great on ice, but if I take it easy it pulls well on it.

I'm totally prepared. I have an AWD legacy and have a set of rims with Continental winter tyres if needed and another set with Yokohama snow/ice tyres if things got really bad.

What are you going to do, put on the right tyres when you start to slide? It's winter now! :)

The tyres I currently have on the car (Bridgestone Turanzas) are new and have 99% thread remaining. They're fine for current weather conditions.

I have made no preparations to my car whatsoever. I did check the freezing point of the coolant but that's it. I have 4 summer tyres and in the boot I have my standard pack with jump leads, water, oil, hivis, coat, folding sand ladder type things for putting under wheels if I get stuck. I carry this stuff all through the year :). I also keep my car with at least a 1/4 tank of petrol just incase I get stuck in bad traffic or whatever. Seeing as the temperature has barely wiped below 4c so far this year winter tyres really aren't needed.

Stoppable enough if there's ice tbh.. I'd rather a front wheel drive small van with winter tyres, or a fwd car with winter tyres. We grit roads and when the weathers really rough, like we got a couple of years ago, jeeps are ok, but the small fwds are better. There was a Volve s40 on winters in the yard and it was grabbed first every time as it really just handled snow and ice brilliantly. Same went for a dispatch with winters on - brilliant on snow and ice. If you want helpless entertainent, use a rear wheel drive van - dicing with death springs to mind..:)

It's kind of cheating because I'm in Canada (in relatively mild Vancouver however). I bought a 04 Subaru Impreza 2.5 TS in October and the owner had just bought and equipped it with a set of all weather Nokian WRG2's that are rated for snow and ice. Had about 5 or 6 inches of snow the other day and it was great fun driving around the place, the Impreza handled it like a boss.

Where do you guys think you live?

Unless you live up a mountain, there's no need to do anything.

awd, 4wd has very little to do with going anywhere.
Winterized cars are those with proper winter tyres, and adequate antifreeze (not water) and adequate oil.
    Mine certainly is.

Taking it handy counts too, for the conditions we have generally, drove around a small front wheel drive in the 3 bad winters, no problems, others the same or in a fiat panda.
