Want to learn an instrument

I'm not very musical so looking for something middle of the road, played the tin whistle in primary school and though it was handy enough pick up.

Something a bit harder/more technical but not too tough.

Any advise/suggestions? I'd be determined but a slow learner. I was thinking maybe the violin as I really like it as an instrument but it could be a bit tough for me.

I would not let the idea of an instrument being "tough" or "easy" to learn, dictate my decision. To get any way competent on any instrument, you have to be prepared to put in the work. You get out of it what you put in.

Pick an instrument that appeals to you. Lessons from a teacher are a great way to get started. Later, when you have the basics down, you can consider learning on your own if you wish. Dont worry about being a slow learner. We all learn at our own pace. Just make sure that it's fun.

Buy a cheap old ukulele and enjoy learning. Mahalo sopranos can be had for less than 30euro. Tons of free resources for them online too.

Whatever instrument appeals to you go for it, and enjoy learning it. I've been playing guitar for ten years, want to try something different so I'm going to pick up piano and harmonica in the new year and also maybe try and learn to play some slide guitar.

Find the music you like, and get the instrument thats used for that.

That said I think the violin is harder then some instruments, but if you love the music it won't matter. It will just take a little longer than on a piano or something like that. Just have patience.

The violin is a superb instrument to play.

You, and your loved ones, will have to accept that you will only make screeching noises for the first good while.

There is no short cut to playing well. If you try and cut corners early on then you will find that it will have implications later on.

Definitely get a teacher. Don't try it on your own.

Learn how to tune your violin and don't splash out. Buy a cheap-ish one to start off with.

Enjoy it. If you stick with it you will eventually be playing some amazing music.
