    The man left a legacy.
His weapon is widely regarded as the greatest firearm ever created. Can shoot after its fell in sand, mud or water. Amazing.

For someone who invented the most well known fireman in the last century, he didn't do very well financially out of it. Mind you, his place in the history books is assured :)

By that logic Henry Ford is a mass murderer too.

Weapons are needed for defence, no way around it.

He was on that 2013 death list (predictions) that someone posted here a couple of weeks ago, I remember being surprised that he was still going. Peter O'Toole was another.

I visited a military museum in St. Petersburg and they had an entire section dedicated to the AK 47 and a sort of shrine to this guy in the corner. It was great!

Don't think any other gun is featured on a national flag either!

Hold your fire, put down that weapon,
He'll never get to Heaven with that AK-47.

I was in Mozambique when the flag used was the 1975 to 1983 design. It was lovely as the diagonally placed colours rippled in the breeze

I thought the design for this gun was swiped from Nazi Germany after the Soviets conquered Berlin and slightly improved upon by him?

It was originally the STG 44 Sturmgewehr used late on by the Germans it was also the first modern assault rifle you could mount a infrared night vision scope to

The Germans had the STG-44. It certainly influenced the AK47, but they're very different.

I'm not fan of guns, but even putting aside the fact that this dude never got formal training or even finished school, he was an engineering genius and this weapon proves it. Whatever about what people actually did with it, if you look at it in terms of the balance in ease of use, cheapness of manufacture, durability etc the AK is probably the greatest firearm ever made.

As I said, I hate guns but this guy was a genius and that should be recognized

Take it Gerry and Martin will be at his funeral.

Though they mainly used Armalites and Thompsons.

For anyone interested in the history of the AK, a New York Times journalist wrote a good book on it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Gun-Story-AK-47/dp/0141020636/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387884418&sr=8-1&keywords=the+gun

Mikhail must have been wondering about the next world.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-25709371

In his letter to Patriarch Kirill, Kalashnikov said that he first went into a church at the age of 91 and was later baptised.
