    All,

My brother-in-law is trying to sell his Santa Fé on a few sites. Its a 2007 and he's looking to get the market rate on the car. Do you think there is a limit as to what people what to spend buying a car privately? Do people perfer using a dealers over certain amounts? He has had few calls and nothing serious, and although not too concerned about shifting it quick he is wondering if he needs to trade it against the next car?

Do people still spend 10k on a car privately?

Or is he missing something obvious here?:

    Yes, for the correct car.

Hi 1st there are way too many pics of the inside also it's coming up price in sterling which may put people off.

He needs to take fresh pics hopefully in good day light even better in the sun(take all angles outside and a few inside).

He needs to put in price plus or nearest offer also needs to lower it a bit the car is nearly 7 years old.

Seems to be priced well enough, but there's a hell of a lot of them on the market, presumably due to the tax bill.

There's 89 x 07regs (out of 320 for sale in total) showing up on Carzone alone, seems a lot for a car of this size and class. I reckon it's just going to be hard for your brother-in-law to sell this car.

Personally I'd take the hit on the trade in and save myself the time and effort.

Personally there's no way I'd buy a modern car for that sort of money privately considering the amount that can go wrong (electronics, injectors, DMF etc)

Plus you have to deal with all the timewasters, dreamers, idiots looking to swap their rolling scrap heap, or trying to bargain you down based on random stuff they think is wrong

I'd trade it in and save myself the hassle personally. The only time I'd buy a car privately is if it was €2k or less and I checked it out as best I could first.

Go onto Carzone and you will find plenty of 2007 Santa Fes for sale for less than €10k from dealers, meaning they come with a warranty. I dont see him getting €10250 from a private sale when people could buy the same car for €8950 from a dealer Im afraid.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll pass it on. Good to get general opinions. Tis a bit of a bus alright, and probably a limited market would be looking at these.

KE reg, high tax, highish miles, private sale.

Would say it is about €2k overpriced. Even then it's a riskyish buy for anyone looking. He could hold out and hope to eventually get lucky, but he will just be dropping prices, €500 every month, always chasing it but never getting there.

Nice jeeps but have their know and expensive faults from what I've heard too.

What on earth does the ke reg have to do with the price?

How on earth does anyone not know that it does?

For some people a "D Reg" is the ultimate in desirability as "country regs" are percieved as having been driven on worse roads etc...in truth it's all non-sense and depends on the car solely.

Do have to say I think it's way overpriced too. Depreciation on one of those is going to be savage. Unless he's really hell-bent on changing I'll wade in with the usualy Boards.ie response of "wouldn't he be better keep his old car"??
If it's going well etc it might be worth thinking about.

The car is being sold in Kildare with a local reg so the reg snobbery thing is really a mute point.

It doesn't matter if it's 'nonsense' or not or why people think it, people generally like to drive a reg from their county. There are a LOT more people in Dublin. Therefore a D reg is more valuable on nearly any car. It's purely a number of potential buyers thing.

Every bloody time someone points out the absolute fact of it, people start banging on about whether it's right or that it is stupid/makes no difference to them as if that comes in to it.

Will be little demand for a 2.2 litre diesel SUV with motor tax of nearly €1k and looking for €10k. In these times the average idiot wants to spend tens of thousands to save a couple hundred in motor tax.

Tip - Change the kilometres listed to miles, people might be more inclined to enquire if it's below that magical 100k miles number.

The seller is actually right on the average.

    Yeah average asking,not average actual,

revenue omsp is 10 k always optimistic these days. Going by that,7950 would be a reasonable asking price in private sale.

For anything to sell of that ilk at the moment it needs to be in with the five cheapest equivalents on donedeal, ie miles and spec, and alway. Look at the ones a year newer and older too to see the competition.

Trade it in up north there's a rebate of 2500 if exported.

Price seems a bit high to me. My parents had a similar jeep 07 but it was the higher spec one auto too and they sold theres in 2010. They tried to sell it privately and just gave up after 2 months traded it in and got there new car. Sometimes its just not worth trying to sell stuff privately. It seems to be the tax that puts everyone of them. the 100k miles will put some people of too even though its not high mileage considering its age.

What did they get back then as a trade in for it?

But you have to wade through a lot of idiots and timewasters and lowball merchants. Especially if you are not selling a post '08 "cheeep taaax" car.

I've listed my car on a couple of UK sites as there has been no serious interest in the south. All of the '06 535ds for sale are dearer than mine but still.

The problem is that despite what the averages might say, there are something like 14 similar cars available right now on Carzone, from dealers, for less money (about €9k seems to be about the average), so a €10k+ private sale offering is not going to look even remotely attractive. I certainly wouldnt be looking at a private sale that is more expensive than a dealer, until I had checked out all of the dealer cars anyway.

I've actually send your ad onto a mate in the market for a 535d.

    Cheers :).
The market is almost non-existant in Ireland. I've given it until february-march by which point I will start listing on every UK site possible and anywhere else I can find. Sick of the sight of her at this stage, it is costing me money and I am not driving it as much as it should! (Between the truck and the carina I don't need it)

They got 20k for it but that was with 80k km on it and it was the delux 4wd auto model highest spec you could get so there was at least a 10k price difference and probably more in the new price of the ops and there one. They are a lovely jeep but they seemed to be always hard to sell.
