Hi. I'm heading to the shops tomorrow into the city centre in Dublin and looking for a beginners guitar for an 8 year old. Dont want to break the bank. Any ideas on where to buy it? I want a case with it, my lad hasn't even started to get lessons and it might go south pretty quickly so need value for money. Anyone got any ideas to save me lots of looking?

A yamaha FG310 will cost about €120 you will also need a case for it for about €30 to €40 forget about cloth gigbags....you'll only end up with a broken guitar going to and from classes.

Steel string guitars are initially hard to play until you get callusses on the tips of your fingers but are more suitable for Irish, folk, country and western and pop music.

Nylon string guitars are more suitable for classical and melody music but require more study and more formal music theory to realy get the most out of.

Make sure the strings are not too high off the fingerboard (The action) or the guitar will be hard to play. Also make sure the student gets lessons about proper hand positions, warm up exercises and ways to strengthen hands for easier playing and a lot of hassle will be saved.

A huge amount of lessons and tips on line nowadays which can help.

Also most modern music formats are now in tune with most guitars (concert pitch) so playing with your favourite tunes is a lot easier than in the days of tape and analogue records.

Try Argos if your lookin for somethin cheap and cheerful...if it was me I'd just buy a cheap case(for a cheap guitar).blanch music in coolmine industrial estate has some stuff that might interest you too..where abouts are you living? I give lessons at very reasonable rate you can pm if your interested..I'd probably go with the nylon to start off with too..I started when I was 8 on a really cheap nylon, when it was clear I was interested in it and was going to be playing long term my father spent a little more on a decent one.no point spending a fortune on a guitar that will just gather dust..I think maybe 50 or 60euro?

http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/5408092/Trail/searchtext%3EGUITAR.htm this would actually do you fine it comes with a case and everything..also some good second hand stuff on adverts although I know second hand isn't always an option for Christmas present.I haven't played this exact guitar or anything but I know people who got guitars this price range from Argos a few years ago and they were fine to play.
