Sky broadband and sky channels issue

I seen this this morning on one of the threads. I have a full subscription to all the channels for around 18 years now. I also have multiroom for a long period as well. I was thinking of getting out the phone as both myself and wife have a great mobile phone package and we'd hardly use the landline at all.

I wanted the extra sky box so had to have a phone to enable me to for this. In the middle of Nov i rang sky and they said id make savings if i switched my landline to sky as well which to be fair was a better deal than eircom. I had a 30 opt out which would have expired on 12th Dec.

This new deal was out on 18th. Think its incredibly bad form of sky to tie a customer into a 12 month contract 6 days before they announce that you don't need a phone anymore only a broadband connection.

I only ever had a phone in for the internet connection and my phone bills will show this. I'm probably going to be out of pocket to the tune of over €400 over Sky's sneakiness. Bad bad form on their part

Have you spoke to Sky about it. I find that they are usually alright with stuff like this and they might put you on the new deal. Especially if you are 18 years with them

They have waived a lot of stuff over the years for me

I rang them this morning and they said you need a phone connection to have multiroom. Now unless I'm reading this completely wrong you now only need a broadband connection to work through the call backs to make sure all sky boxes are at the same address

Can anyone confirm this as I'll get back on to them if so

How are you out €400? What broadband do you have?

The broadband i'm happy with, its the additional cost of having a landline phone when its not now a requirement for having an extra box on multiroom

How does it break down cost wise? How is having the phone €32 more a month?
    Isn't broadband and phone €40 a month?

That's kinda the information i'm looking for. It can't be the same cost broadband + phone as opposed to just broadband can it ? I don't have need for a landline for house phone, its just at the time it was necessary to have it for multiroom so i kept it

You have to take out sky talk with your broadband subscription so yeah it's the same cost regardless, still much cheaper than eircom

If you take up Sky's phone offer you will have to agree to have a home phone as well. They had triall offers last year but that offer is now replaced by a €40 a month tarriff for broadband & phone.

If I was in your position, I'd be putting the gun to Sky's head after paying rip-off prices for 18 years. Play hardball with them and threaten to cancel. You will surely get an offer. Have a read of Sky's offer in the Bargain Alerts Forum. Lots of guys & gals posting details of their offers there.

Cheers for that, I'm tied into a contract now so I'll have to wait till i get to end of it but I'll remember to do that

How does €40 a month differ to the alternative package you'd been hoping for? My understanding is you're paying line rental either way and phone+bb is nearly always cheaper than just broadband regardless of provider when you're non-fibre.

as a ex sky installer i can tell you if u threaten them with a cancellation they will bend over backwards to keep you as a customer, they would rather keep taking any amount of money they can get out of you even if its less then what your currently paying, ive had a time ive rang to order a new hd sky plus box as they kept giving me faulty refurbished box's, 3 in total so i rang and said the third box u game me is also faulty and i told them i wanted a bran new box as every one they gave me was faulty and they had the cheek to say i had to pay €249 for it, so i said feck ya's im switching to upc and told them to cancel my account, they switched me to cancellations where i was asked why i was leaving so told them and also made sure they knew ive been a customer for many a year and was offered the same box for €29 with free installation and 6 months half price tv and movies.

so forget about your contract and just have the balls to stand up for yeself. as ive said they would rather keep a customer then lose one ;)

Ive been getting no signal since thursday and was told an engineer won't be available till the 7th of January. That tops off the faulty broadband I've been using. UPC will be here in the morning.

As far as i know my calls and broadband aren't capped at €40 so i will incur phone charges of sorts, so there will be a difference between broadband and broadband + phone
