Teeth moving after braces

Hi everyone! Hoping someone can help me out here or has had a similar experience and knows what to do.

In July 2009, I got braces on my bottom teeth. They weren't horribly crooked, but I was advised to because of the possibility of plaque build up at the bad angles. In Dec 2010 they were taken off and I was given a retainer. I wore it religiously as instructed, and then in around June of 2011 my orthodontist told me to just stop wearing it from then on. That's honestly not a lie from someone who just didnt bother, I was shocked at the time, but because I hated wearing it I assumed he knew what he was talking about and stopped.

You can guess where this is going. My retainer no longer fits and I'm quite sure my teeth have moved and are still moving. They're not that bad yet, but it's stressing me out a lot. What should I do?

I think a friend of mine had a new retainer fitted when she forgot to wear hers for a while - is this common? Or would the orthodontist's bad advice have any bearing on the outcome?

    Thank you.
