Training for an off road ultra...

...did a couple of road marathons before switching to IMRA runs this year.

Now thinking of doing the Wicklow Way Ultra next March.

Fitness levels not bad, getting in a 25k lsr on Kerry Way most weekends, then maybe a midweek gym session. But presumably will need to ramp it up in New Year. Hate the thought of facing into another Hal Higdon course, in fact it was that whole rigidity and the thought of starting into the whole 3 or whatever months of it again that put me off another road marathon, the thought of having to get in X miles on tarred roads every week until it becomes a joyless chore. On the other hand need to bring some discipline or focus to my routine.

    Any tips?

You are used to long walks in the hills. Your training for the ultra should focus on long runs in the hills which don't have the same drudge factor as road running. You need to train the body (and mind!) for the time you are going to be spending on your feet, practising your pacing and fuelling strategy. If you can get a few 3 to 4 hr slow hill runs in, in your local hills you'll be fine. Good luck with your goal.

Hadn't even thought of the fuelling issue.

Not a fan of gels.  Currently 25km means 2 Jaffa cakes, but suspect 50km will involve slightly more than 4 Jaffa cakes! Really have to start figuring out what works...though reluctant to let go of my pasta before a long run and Jaffa cakes during it routine.

You'll have the option of leaving a bag at the turnaround point, from a fueling standpoint.

It's an early start in the morning for the ultra too. So some long runs first thing to get your body used to that ungodly hour would be useful.
