Lots of mushrooms and onions with garlic to flavour.

How come you didn't notice the lack of mince in your pack of mince?

A can of kidney beans will work well.

A courgette, some carrots and peppers - shred them very finely in a food processor.

An onion, kidney beans and some cashews.

    Voila

Ditto on the beans. When I make it, I like to put in some mixed beans. It's great.

You should've bought the cow mince. That deer mince goes to nothing when it's cooked

Most people buy by the weight.

Gotta buy meat by weight, not by price. 150g per waif & 250g for everyone who wants a proper dinner.

Loads of veg, carrots, mushrooms, celery, you could try some pulses too. I get 4-5 good dinners out of 500g of steak mince.

You get what you pay for though, don't skimp on the cost of meat IF you can avoid it. But as others have said, loads of peppers, onions, and mushrooms would do the job. Plenty of pasta will fill him up.

Bulk it up with something from the medicine press ,laxatives or iodine tablets maybe.

Or you could blend in some old newspapers. The fat bastard won"t even notice.

Remove the mince, place on kitchen counter, perform CPR, replace in field for a further 6 to 12 months, re-slaughter, re-mince and return to a simmer.

In fairness, you've had way too many sensible answers for AH

Loads of veg will fill it out no problem. Beans will too. A small handful of porridge oats will fool most people into thinking there is more minced meat in the bolognaise, but you do need to cook it for long enough to cook the oats through.

Oats: blitz them a bit if you only have jumbo. They need to be well cooked and you may need a bit of extra stock.

Dress your pasta with olive oil and if you have pots of fresh basil and parsley on the windowsill provide lots of extra flavour with chopped herbs. Then grate on fresh Parmesan or Grana Padano and perhaps accompany with some garlic bread. That'd fill the average horse.

Got to an abbatoir. Ask for some lips, hooves and connective tissue. Mince them and measure out a weight of half a pound. Add to your good mince.

Hey presto, a pound of cheap mince.

Celery carrots and onion are traditional in a bolognese, I'd try lentils too if you want to bulk it up more

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,087 ✭✭✭Spring Onion

Red Wine (bulk up the 'liquid' before adding below)
    Tomatoes
    Onions
    Green/Yellow Pepper
    Sliced carrots
    Broccoli (strange but yummy)
    Mushrooms
Garlic crushed (for taste more than bulk)
    Mixed Herbs (Oregano vital)
    Some cooked bacon (X-factor!)
    Sugar if too sharp

I like my Bolognese to have lots of colour (red, green, yellow, orange above)
I have made bolgnese in bulk with all of the above and it was really really tasty.

Remember to taste the sauce as you cook.

(Spring Onions, if you have em)

If you put celery in there, I will call round to your house and whack you!

Dice an onion, a carrot, two sticks of celery. Fry these until softened, add your mince, cook 'til brown, add some crushed garlic, sliced mushrooms, diced pepper and cook for a few minutes.
Add a dash of Worcester Sauce, salt, pepper, oregano, basil and pasta sauce.
    Serve with spaghetti.

I buy 2lb of round mince from the butchers and I weigh them out into 250g portions. I use 250g in any mince dish I'm making. It looks like very little meat but I always bulk it out with veg and nobody notices!
