Why is mincemeat so misleading?

First time I heard of a mince pie as a young boy, I thought it was going to be some delicious ground meat pie, I took a bite into it to taste what had to be the absolute most disgusting thing I've ever tasted. Why is it so misleading? I say it should be changed.

According to a programme on the Tele; In the beginning (Victorian times) it was actually made of mince meat, and over time it has evolved and changed into something else, mince meat now being totally absent in a mince pie, but the name still remains.

Should be renamed to sugary-piece-of-crap pie.

My best friend said in all seriousness to me last week, "Mince pies are disgusting. Why would you put mincemeat in pastry?".

They were originally made with meat in them and a bit of fruit to preserve it with the sugar. As the fruit became cheaper they started to add more of it in and eventually just took out the meat to create the beautiful mince pies we have today. Which are delicious, as are pies with meat in them, but the two should not go together!

Well if you don't want the mince pies, you can give them to me. Om nom nom

So what you're saying, is they should be called fruit pies?

Pretty much, they just kinda slowly evolved and kept the name. I don't care what they're called, I just wanna eat them all. Well, not all of them, just my mums. All the rest in the whole are disgusting.

I'm also confused by Plum Pudding, Spotted Dick, Hot Dogs and Toad in the Hole. None of them do as it says on the tin. And there is no cream in Cream Crackers.

The sad thing is my relationship with mince pies was ruined by them being so misleading. I love Christmas pudding, which I'd imagine would be similar enough to mince pies in taste, but due to this traumatic experience from my childhood, I cannot eat them.

I hate them, mostly because I have been robbed of the opportunity to have a ground meat pie. Bastards

    He's on a diet.

Mince pies are reserved for the morbidly obese hence why they're considered a delicacy among AH'ers.

Believe it or not,i - as a foreigner - always thought mince pies are pies with a mince meat(and i did read the small print that said it was mince meat in there). I laughed with my foreign friends how could you top it with the sugar.
Took me 4 years to realize my mistake. Some of my non-Irish friends like it, I don't. I had some pies in UK, and those had meat inside, I thought it was the same thing:o

Mince pies are delicious! I had not one but TWO of 'em tonight, 'cause I'm a fat mad bastard.
To the mince pie haters amongst you: I bid you good day, and hope that your inferior choice of dessert brings a bitterly disappointing end to your Christmas dinner.

Are you considering two to be a lot? When I go home and mum has them fresh out of the oven I would eat a lot more than two...like, maybe, six, two three times a day :D

The only cure for you is for your mum to put real mincemeat in one and when you took a bite this would be your reaction.

I took a bite into it to taste what had to be the absolute most disgusting thing I've ever tasted

Then you would be traumatised for life and you could never eat them again. Which would be a good thing in the long run.

I made loads of mincemeat as gifts this year - the home made stuff is out of this world, and terribly easy to make!

I have three boxes of M&S mince pies - butter, puff pastry and lattice. I also picked up brandy cream. YUM!
