What is the 08 ford Focus ghia saloon 1.6 petrol like on fuel comparing to a 99 fiesta zetec?

I'm thinking of updating & don't do the miles to justify a diesel however, the choice of petrol cars at about 1.6 is non-existent with the shift to diesel.

The Mitsubishi Lancer 1.5 petrol is the only other saloon car I'm considering but I'm not too sure about its appearance!

I think it depends on the drive if you got good mpg out of the fiesta you should do fine with the focus

If your the type that cant keep fuel in something its same problem diff car

    Not the most economical unit.

    30-35mpg which isn't great

Try and get one with extras, my brother got this one, the 18s, lip kit and spoiler really suit it.

He went from a mk1 Focus 1.6 100hp and reckons they're similar mpg wise but the focus is torquier.
Mk2 focus is heavier than mk1, if I was getting a 1.6 mk2 I'd get the TI-VCT engine over the regular one.

That lancer is lovely, would take it over a focus all day long.

It looks the biz, pity the performance doesn't match the looks though

2004-2008  Try 2008 onwards (77 cars) and take away hatchbacks etc...and your a long way off 576!

Would the focus be a better car overall in terms of spec/toys and performance? Higher spec focuses seem to be hard to come across.

You've more chance of getting big spec on a Focus, the lancers have Bluetooth and aircon and all that but some focuss will have keyless start, leather, climate control etc but not very common. some uk imports would be well specced.

A similar engined and specced Focus is light years ahead of a Lancer.

S40 surely worth a look too

    True that
    1. Focus saloons aren't in an abundance
    2. High specs are really hard to come about
They look well in the titanium spec, was looking at one myself when I was car shopping, and was plesantly surprised.
This is a diesel though, and the colour is a bit off putting and the year is wrong, and the alloys are wrong but it's all I could find :pac:

What about the 1.8 civic saloon, difference in tax would be almost negligible and you'll get 40mpg+, good build quality and honda reliability. Nice looking car too IMO.

    +1

The 1.8 Civic would actually be more fuel efficient than the 1.6 Focus. Tax is only €570 on the 08 or newer Civic saloon too which is around the same as a similar 1.6 Focus. Civic saloon is quite roomie too, it's nearly the same size as the previous generation Accord.

    For example:

I like the civic too, but my only concern would be insurance costs. Up until now I've been a named person on the insurance policy and intend of taking insurance out on my own name now.

I'm going to ring insurance companies tomorrow to see the difference in 1.6 vs 1.8 but I'd imaging a 1.8 would be quite expensive.

Does it have to be a saloon. Including hatchbacks and you will a wider choice.

Yes - I'd rather a saloon. I've been driving the fiesta for years and want something more roomier. This is the focus I came across:

A hatchback is usually more roomy/practical than a saloon though.

Personally I couldn't live with having to look at that fake wood effect on the dashboard every day. What were they thinking?

But all the cars mentioned whether hatchback or saloon form have the same interior room, the only difference is the boot access. Ie a Focus saloon has the same interior room as the Focus hatchback. The only difference is the hatchback offers more practical use of the boot. Any of these will be roomier than a 99 Fiesta.

    What about a Volvo S40:

I know the interior in the hatch and saloon are the same, but I hate the back of the hatch focus for some reason and like the back of the saloon.

Actually like the S40 Volvo especially the leather interior. Are they good on petrol?

The 1.6 is from the Focus, not as powerful as the one in the Ghia Focus and slightly less fuel efficient.

Civic hatchback is bigger in the cabin than the saloon

A similar engined and specced Focus is light years ahead of a Lancer.

    Fanboyism at its best :D:D:D

    1) Diesel

150bhp dohc 1.8 diesel Diesel Lancer is way better than the 115bhp runty little french diesel engine in the Focus.

It blows it out of the water performance wise and it's about 5k cheaper new as well, reliable too, French lump in the Focus has it's share of problems.

List price on a new 115bhp diesel Focus is what 24-25 for the basic model?

You would get the top spec Lancer, with all the extra's and Ralliart kit easily for 25k and 150bhp, with decent brake upgrade as well.

    Plus a 7 year warranty!!

    2) Performance.

EVO X anyday of the week over that the Focus RS as well, over a second faster to 60, incredible 4 wheel drive system, proper twin clutch gearbox, grip, grip, grip.

    3) 1.6 Focus vs 1.5 Lancer petrols

Both are a fairly mundane and underpowered for what they are, Lancer might be a bit more reliable and has a timing chain I believe, so should be cheaper to maintain.

I think he's talking about driving dynamics. In that regard the focus is definitely the better car.
