Previous owner question

    Hi Folks,
Just a quick question, I bought a car recently and was told by the garage that it had one previous owner ( the guy verified this after looking at the car registration certificate). However when the car was transferred to my name and the registration certificate (VLC) sent to me, it shows as 2 previous owners. Does this mean I am the third owner or does it include myself as the second owner.

2 previous owners = 3 owners including you.
Unless the car is under 2 years old it doesn't make a difference but I'd be annoyed if the salesman straight-out lied to me.

Ok thanks, yeah so it looks like he lied to me. Before signing the final papers to buy the car, the sales guy was looking for the VLC cert in a little folder he had. I made sure to ask him again to verify that the car only had one owner, he looked at the paper and said "yeah it has one owner". It is just amazing that people can blatantly lie to you. Ahh well still like the car anyway.

Maybe the first owner was the garage (demo car)

They still show up the same on the VRC though.

A cartell or similar report will show dates that ownership changed.

Yeah I did do a CarTell report but it doesn't show the date of the initial sale.. but rather just the second sale..

Yeah, the initial registration date is on your reg cert, second sale is on cartell report and you know when you bought it.

Thats a common trick of the trade.
The logbook records previous owners so the logbook belonging to first owner will show a zero beside previous owners.
The dealer in this case had in his hand a logbook with one previous owner recorded meaning that was the book belonging to second owner. Op is then number 3. The system makes it stupidly easy for people to pull this trick.
