Can anyone recommend a good pair of hiking boot that would be suitable for rough shooting a pair that will take abuse and that has a good warranty

Not a hunter, but stumbled across this thread. Meindl boots are amazing. The price is off putting, bit they will outlast cheaper rivals. I'v used them for years for hiking, climbing and walking. If your looking for a serious boot go for a pair. They are super comfy, ridiculously durable, waterproof, breathable and not clunky or heavy. Good for all terrains and all weather. But there'll be a boot to suit your usual conditions. Their range are designed for different body shapes, and foot shapes so I'm afraid online buying is out. But the extra €30 or so is worth it for such an investment. Great Outdoors in Dublin stock them and do proper fittings, make some time, it could take a while to get yen right one for you. Best of luck.

I have a pair of Meindl dovre extremes and the leather is starting to split after 2 years not impressed.

However i was this year I bought a pair of British army pro boots like these ones for £30 on ebay.

    proboots_zpsfb429ee9.jpg

I've worn them out a few times and they are great. They have great support the soles have fantastic grip especially going up slipper banks. The soles on the meindls I found to be a bit slippery on hard surfaces.

Before I started using them i gave them a liberal dosing of black Kiwi polish and meindl boot wax, I done this every night for a couple of weeks and left the boots by the fire for it to melt in and then rubbed it all in again working it into the leather.

This probably ruins the whole point of having breathable goretex but I'm not bothered, I just need good foot and ankle support and boots that are dry and have good grip.

The boots are easy to clean as they are nice and smooth with a minimum amount of stitching or nooks and crannies that trap mud and ****. I just hose them off, stuff with news paper and dry by the fire and rub in the wax and boot polish again.

German army boots are excellent, I'ld like to try them, they're not goretex but they are a well renowned boot.

But i don't think I'll ever go down the expensive hiking boots route again they look gucci but **** that. A decent well tried pair of combat boots are just as good.

Meindl are a great boot alright.

When I first joined the DF in 2002 I bought a pair of these.

They were a great boot. I served in them for 5 years and plenty of work on the ground and in rivers forests etc.

Right were the sole was wrapped around the foot of the boot there has like a little over lap that pealed a bit but never affected the boot or never got worse. I had the boots for 8 years. But for 2-3 years the got abused and the 2 they good good wear and after that of was every other day.

I'd try them on doe as I do remember sizes needed fitting.

Plus 1 on Meindl, bought two pairs from Great Out Doors and got great ware out of them. Had one pair resoled twice (used to run on pavement with them) . My latest pair are 'sponsored' by the job another good boot. I still use a pair of Matterhorns and find them very comfortable with great grips.

The Great Out Doors in Dublin. That's many years ago, but they got the soles and other parts in and sent them out for resoleing. The integrity of the boot was perfect when I got them back.
Memory doesn't serve me for the cost as it was about 12 years plus since then.

I have had Various makes of hiking boots over the years, Demon, Brasher, Harkila and Meindl.
Meindl are the best by far. I currently have a pair of Taiga GTX which are the heavier leather version of the high Army boots. Hugely comfortable and supportive which is important if you are on the mountain. Third winter with them now and still like new - but I do look after them.
It is very important to get them properly fitted as they have different foot beds to suit different foot widths. I can recommend a guy called Neil in the Great Outdoors in Dublin, but make sure it's him you get, some of the others haven't, shall we say, the same level of experience ;)

Its about €50-€60 these days and i think they usually have everything in stock! They send you round the corner to a shoe repair guy who does all their work afaik

Nice one! Look after them, plenty of wax. Great investment for the amount of hours you lot spend stalking and tramping. Happy hunting.

Try Hi Tec or Hoggs of Fyffe also. Great value for money and great quality. Both can be bought online very reasonably. Alternatively try Outlet in Kildare Village
