Public elective surgery cost?

Hi all, I think I'm in the right place, and I hope this question isn't one that's asked all the time!

My GP referred me to a consultant in the public system. In due course I was seen, sent for tests, and seen again.

On the last visit, the consultant said that elective surgery *might* alleviate my problem. He proceeded to put me on the list, saying I could change my mind later.

I forgot to ask him about the cost, however. Anyone know what the story is? Do I pay all, I pay a proportion, I pay a standard visit fee, or I pay nothing?

(I don't have private insurance, by the way)

Is there not a nightly charge for the bed if the OP has to stay in?

    Not quite true.

Unless you have a medical card, you'll be charged €75 per day you're admitted, upto a max of 10 days (and you can't be charged more than €750 in a year). That covers everything (inpatients test, surgery, scans).

I think it depends on admission?

I had day surgery in 2012 and I was charged the day admission rate of €75 if your an inpatient I think there's a daily rate subject to a maximum of €700ish.

Thanks for the prompt responses lads! Guess I should've looked here first:

I was sure I'd heard stories of people being stung with a hefty anaesthetist's bill months after the event, but it would seem that wouldn't apply here.

That only applies if you go privately.
Can be hefty though, Mrs Fowl got stung a few years ago for this. was genuinely surprised to see it was as much as the surgeons fee for a very specialised operation...
