Hi all, hoping to get a cheap Saorview box over Christmas in Dublin for someone. They don't have HDMI ports on the telly so scart is the way to go and just looking for a viewing box no pvr/dvr etc needed.

Would the one in the link below do the job or if not could you recommend the cheapest ones preferably in town or around Dublin 12 I would be very grateful, know it is askin alot but I was put on the spot!

    Cheers

That isnt an official Saorview box so I would avoid it .
Teletext may not work and it wont be as future proof as an official receiver.

Best bet would be Argos for this one for 49.99 which has pvr capabilities

or Tesco who have Saorview receivers for 49 euro (no pvr)

Thanks for the reply Zardoz, do either of them support playback from usb? Forgot to mention that would be a good bonus point for the box too.

    Cheers

I think they both support playback from usb ,not sure what exact file types though.
Should play mpeg4 ,xvid and mp3's not sure about h264 files though.

I was puzzled as to why the saorview tuner worked for 9 days after the storm killed the hdmi input and then just broke out of the blue

You sure the cable isn't damaged instead of the tuner in the tv. mite have taken time to burn through the cable fully and hence why it mite have worked for a few days. have you checked with something else such as a saorview box temporarily on the end of the cable to see ?

Sorry to hear....if your going down the route of a box I would recommend the Triax TR212 as its a dual tuner box that will alow you to record one channel whilst watching another.

Its quite likely the lightning weakened the tuner which has now failed.
