Accord or Mondeo

So ive given up buying something I really want for now and decided to get something high spec and comfortable with somewhat reasonable mpg. Its between a Mondeo or Accord. Id be looking at Executive spec for the latter in either the 2.0 or 2.2 diesel and the 1.8sci ghia in the Mondeo.

I will have time after I finsh my Masters in June to do some road trips to Europe and Scottish Highlands etc so if the 2.0 diesel Mondeo engine is reliable enough and I can find one with injectors, flywheel done I might go for that.

Best thing about these cars is theres lots to choose from here and both are reasonably priced.

    What engine/car would ye recommend??
Budget is 4k and under. could stretch a bit for a nicer example

There was a 05 or 06 Mondeo 1.8 SCi Ghia for sale on adverts.ie there recently asking €3500. Unless you are doing the mileage then you will probably get more petrol Mondeo or Accord for your money than diesel.

I'd look at the Mazda 6 also, just make sure it is rust free.

I was looking at the 6s alrght but id want a 06 facelift one and they seem more expensive now than they were this time last year.

i think the accord would be my favourite but the mondeo is very cheap.
I probably have a week to find something. Ill check adverts

I know the timing chain will need to have been done on the 2.2 diesel accord, the spec is higher on them and theres so many which is why Im considering them. Seem to be quite reliable too

im even looking at 2.4s now! this has been for sale for 3months, ridiculously priced but still a stunning car http://www.adverts.ie/car/honda/accord/2006-honda-accord-euro-sport/3668801

i saw that one bazz, looks nice and is what im after. some penta alloys would look nice. 4,700 is overpriced there too

Yeah, he will never get anywhere near that asking price for that 2.4 litre in this country.

If you're looking at a 2.2 Accord check for clutch slip, they're notorious for having too much power for the original clutch.

I like mondeo and prefer them to an avensis or passatt but a Honda is in a different class IMO

^ Like he says, I wouldn't see the Mondeo as even being in the same class as the Accord tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

theyre a good bit cheaper though. i have about a week to buy something anyway. want to spend about 3500 on a petrol executive accord or a sci mondeo like above

Have a drive of both of them - you'll see for yourself, day and night imo....

the interior of executives is really nice in fairness, just wish you could get sat nav in the 2.0 petrols :(

Many would disagree - but I actually prefer the first Accord - prefer the lighter coloured leather interior

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

Yeah, interior of the executive with the type s lip kit and colour of the second, Thats exactly what I want

Id be looking at the Mondeo tbh - especially if your going to be taking passengers on the road trips - Mondeos are very nice in the back from what I can see - space wise.

Don't think the Accords look as good.

I wouldn't buy the Accord without driving the Mondeo - especially a 2.0 petrol Mondeo first - Mondeos still a nice place to be if you have leather.

And Accord is really not much better then Mondeo inside - if its got a cloth interior.

I bought a type s Accord in October mine is 09 they are lovely car mine is petrol 2.0 too. Very comfortable and love the look of type s. Delighted with it coming from my diesel focus. That blue accord is same colour as mine too. I don't think that is an actual type s kit on it either looks bit different to me..

I have one, nice enough car to drive, good bit of poke and easy enough on fuel. Passengers like it and it's a good place to sit on a long journey. Cruise control works well and it has enough toys. Also very cheap to buy...

With regards to a petrol modeo, id have a petrol accord before one. The accord has a much nicer petrol engine than the mondeo Imo.

You're looking at 2.4 litre petrol Accords.........just get another 325 and be done with it to fvck!!!

I know ye're in about petrol accords, but a colleague has a 2.2 diesel. Commutes about 100 miles a day, and she recons that it's a pig on fuel. Has cost her a fortune.

You don't need to replace the timing chain on a Honda Accord 2.2 Diesel unless it gets noisy, being a Honda with their superb quality engineering this is unlikely to need to be replaced before 250000 klms if the car was regularly serviced.

Noccy Mondy -- if your colleague is getting any less than 55 mpg with mixed driving she should get the car looked at.

She's off on maternity leave atm. I'll ask when she comes back. She was complaining about how much of a pig it was before she left. Then again it could be the hormones :pac:

early diesel accords weren't any thing to write home about with regards reliability, Imo "their super quality engineering" didn't extend beyond their petrols of the time.

Even some of Honda's petrol cars of the early to mid 00's weren't that great either. E.g the EP civic with their weak gearboxes and troublesome steering. The last truly superbly engineered hondas were those built in the mid to late 90's Imo.

Timing chains do go in them accord diesels and some go well before they reach 225k kms. Some of this is down to maintenance bit it's not unheard of in well maintained examples either.

they weren't quality engineering and anything that needs to be replaced will be expensive.

could be the HPF then... hormone particulate filter:D

I have a 04 mondeo ghia 1.8sci - grand car, roomey, nice cruiser but a bit flat footed when you shoe in, not so easy on juice(about 30mpg) but most my driving is urban.
