Mash them up with some hard-boiled eggs. That will guarantee no-one will stay long near you over the Christmas:D:D:D.

Do you think they will honour the 28 day money back if your kids are not happy with your veg.;)

With all this cut price veg, could be the healthiest Xmas dinner Ireland will see in a long time,
Maybe some might recall the 6c beans in the UK, twas the start of global warming.:o

Do you ever think about the farmers who are somehow trying to make a profit ,it doesn't add up

It's not the farmers that are taking a hit, it's just a loss leader to get people into the supermarkets.

So what about the smaller shop trying to compete with this

Well thats exactly what competition is. Smaller shops have to be creative about competition and not just fall on the old, "im small so I am a victim".

Lets say you were a small shop owner. You too can use the loss leader approach. Say you made your veg 30c or so for 500g and advertise the arse out of it outside the shop.

People will see this and probably shop in their local and thus buy more goods that have a good profit margin.

Smaller shops simply have to be creative. Its the same idea for super-pubs and big chains of anything really.

Small shops pay the price for being small and very local (offering chit chat with customers). That's what they do. Anyway my local Centra is always doing offers, some them pretty good.

No. I never consider farmers in Spain, Costa Rica or France to be honest.

I do however consider the people of Ireland that don't have as much as Farmers in wealth terms.

    Those that cannot afford much.

Well played Aldi , Lidl et al, well played

Yeah, whatever few cent you might have saved buying the onions is all lost after paying through the nose for emmental cheese

A lidl staff member I spoke to said they have paid suppliers as normal.

Both Aldi & Lidl are loss-leading in the 'Veg Wars'.

Haven't heard a peep from Dunnes

There have been protests by farmers at LIDL. In Bandon the farmers were outside and actually handing out free vegetables to encourage people not to go in.

If lidl is anything to go by there be people filling there tolly full 6c offers and nothing else, the shopkeeper would just be taking an unsustainable loss for nothing.

Tesco have added limes into their fruit deal- its not a massively good offer but 20p a piece is better than anywhere else.

I don't know what all the fuss is about this year. This is now an annual event between Dunnes, Lidl and Aldi. Teco and Supervalu have not gotten as involved this year as they have in other years.

Certainly we're at this Christmas veg price war for the past 4 - 5 years. Any long term posters to this forum will know this.

As ridiculous as prices get at Christmas time, every week (or every 2nd week for some) the main grocery retailers are engaged in fruit n veg loss leaders.

With a bit of forward planning you can have your family eating cheap and nutritious fruit n veg throughout the year. Just keep an eye on the BA forum.

I reckon you should buy in some extra of the cheap veg for presents.

    They're actually very nice those Clementine's :)
My fridge is packed as well, so much so I had to make the terrible decision of whether I want warm Milk or warm Coke... One of them had to be left out to make room :(

We waste far too much food at Christmas.
Buying for the sake of buying is just not right.

    http://www.kilkennypeople.ie/news/kilkenny-news/local-households-urged-to-have-a-green-christmas-1-5765368

"The average Irish family throws out €700 worth of food each year and this has a negative effect on every family’s pocket and the environment. Food waste increases substantially over Christmas; with more food thrown out during the festive season than at any other time of the year due to over-buying".

My mother has about a years supply of frozen carrots, parsnips and turnip in the deep freeze out of this, the second deep freeze in the garage which we managed to empty and plug out during the summer has been pushed back into action as we got a homegrown lamb from the farm slaughtered recently and have a few hundred euro worth of lamb for the butchers fee of €30. Lamb burgers have replaced beef also and are damn tasty.

Was funny today in the Aldi Blanch branch watching people almost fighting over the veg. There was easily 10 boxes of each item and of course three per customer, but that didn't stop them.

The look on peoples face when they get to the till to be told three per customer. At least be cute about it and have someone else buy another three, go out an come back in or come back later

I saw Oakland Brand brussel sprouts for sale at a fruit/veg place in the English Market today:eek::eek::eek: Think they were on special offer at 2 for €1.50 or something. It was enevitable that some smaller vendors would buy them to sell on, but to be actually selling them in the lidl bag:confused:
