Sorry thought I had replied. Straw bed . There was too much of a draught under the slats

Many of yas bother with individual pins? I've largely thrown out all of mine, well the old ones were knackered and I couldn't justify the expense of new ones. Calves usually get left under the cow for afew days, then get put in groups of 2-4, usually only the one one move then till they are weaned/sold/letout.

One thing dept guy said here during inspection was that calves in single pens should be able to see have contact with calf in next pen. I said that they are only in them a few days. Just a point to note if you are getting the o Donovan ones

i made up 9 individual pens during the summer, i should have listened to my father when hevsaid make them a bit longer, the calves arse is hitting the wa the whole time, there a bit short too. Calves can jump out of them, came out many a morning to see a calf lying up in the silage

We never had single pens here but have started that Jhones testing program
Part of the mantra is that calves should be taken from cow almost immediately and individually penned for a few days
The cost of them is a bit if a bother at €200 plus vat for a front a back and floor (no backs on them and the end side is extra)
So I thought I better price round

Calves with their head out can see the next calf
I wonder can you put 2 in them for the few days ( it would be halfway twords individual penning at the moment I put every 5 calves together whils being trained with a compartment type gate hung feeder)

i dont think it good enough that they can see the calf, there has to be contact afaik

Thanks I know you are saying what dept inspector would say
    And I would ask
If the calf next has head out as well they could kiss?
How about 2 in a pen?

i'd say 2 in a pen would be a big no no, not enough room

Fox bros in wexford make calf pens, the calves can see each other through the panels and touch each other
