Sending emails taking all my broadband speed

My mum has a Mac, and I don't know much about Macs, but every time she sends an email with an attachment, it takes up all my broadband and no one else in the house can do anything. They aren't big attachments, they're usually only a photo or document, but it goes on for so long, 30 mins, hours, too long...

Our upload speed is not hat bad, it's only 0.4mbps, but that's fast enough for it only to take a few seconds/mins

I got an email saying someone responded, but there's no response that I can see at the moment, not sure if it's glitched for me, anyway, in reply to the response it says in my email, I don't think it would take 44 mins to upload 1mb with my speed. I've uploaded youtube videos which have been over 100's of mb, maybe even over a gb in less then a night.

What kind of email account is it? Gmail on the Mail app has a habit of creating backups of drafts about 10 times a second and pushing them to the server. The latest update for Mavericks is supposed to resolve such issues. Try this:
