    http://www.cartell.ie/2013/12/large-engine-cars-losing-value-numbers-reducing/

Vehicle data experts Cartell report today (19th December) that large-engine vehicles (those in excess of 2,000cc) are in decline with their numbers dwindling. There has been a 72% decrease in the number of 2 litre vehicles registered in 2012 versus 2007. Values have fallen such that the tax on 10-year-old large-engined vehicles can be as high as 40% of their value; and even for 6-year-old vehicles can represent anything from 10-15% of their value. Compare this to a smaller vehicle: a Toyota Yaris registered in 2000 has a market value of approximately €2,300 and annual taxation of €199 – or 8.7% of its value.

    Really sad and depressing. :(

Besides for cars with 3l and more yearly tax is 100% of car's value and even more in lot of cases.

    €2,300 for a 13 year-old Yaris? Are they having a giraffe?

Also, comparing the tax on a car to it's value is utterly meaningless.

My 4.0 litre costs me €1,800 per annum, which is easily more than the car is worth on the open market. But it's worth a whole lot more to me. It has pretty much reached the end of its' depreciation, so now I'm slowly moving towards the point where it will eventually reach classic tax eligibility. But for now I'm in that motoring Limbo. And I own it, so there are no monthly repayments, so it's all swings and roundabouts in that regard.

Yeah, the really sad part is they consider 2 litres to be a large engined car.

Shame they didn't tell it like it is.
