    Howdy lads,

A good mate of mine just bought this:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-320d-m-sports-2001/6138606

While he seems happy with it, does the mileage seems a bit too good to be true? I mean 109,500 is not a lot for a 12 year old diesel!

Maybe it is just me being suspicious!

Any thoughts or problems to look out with this model would be appreciated.

A bit late now since he has bought it but hooking it up to a diagnostic computer will be able to read the mileage from the car's ECU. Normally it is stored there as well as the dashboard instruments on that model afaik.

Then again at this stage he might be better off not knowing.

Inclined to agree tbh. If its clocked then you need to tell the buyer when selling it. Its not fraud however if you dont know...!

Im guessing that it was a private sale, so even if it does turn out to be clocked its going to be a struggle to get anything from the seller (unless you can prove beyond doubt that they knew about it).

I completely agree with you both, it is his fault and he won't get any money back from the seller if it turns out to be clocked (private sale). He only told me after he had bought it, I would have flagged the mileage straight away if I had know before hand.

It could turn out to be grand, but might mention that a diagnostic is worth a check.

Actually there's a much much easier way to do this with BMWs (it's just not 100% guaranteed to be right). Just pop into your local BMW Dealer with the key, and ask them to read the millage.

lets just hope it is genuine, and unlike the other person who posted here recently about the 2000, 318ci, your mate doesnt end up with a money pit, the guy with the 319ci, has ended up putting 7k of repair into a car he paid E1400 for IIRC...

    On a 2001 E46?

Yup. Even on E36/E39s as far as I know. And the best thing is its free. There's a little thing on the desk that looks like this

It's as simple as them putting the key into it, and getting a print out. Here's mine.
