Have you ever regretted parting with a particular car?

    As the title suggests, has anyone ever regretted it afterwards?

    For me the answer is yes. I'm currently driving a VW CC, now there is absolutely nothing wrong with the car but having come from a BMW 3 Series M Sport, I'm finding it hard to adjust back to a car that simply through no fault of it's own, is just not a driver's car. While the 3 Series I had was hardly the halo model of the BMW range, it was still a well engineered car with driver focus at the front of that engineering. The way it was planted on the road, encouraged you to push it into corners and the perfect weighted feed back from the steering. Now I'm not here to put the CC down but while it has more room, more refinement and better attention to detail especially in the cabin, it just cannot hold a candle to the BMW for overall driving pleasure.

    I know BMWs get talked up on this forum alot but from personal experience they are a hard car to beat from a driving perspective. Yes they have their flaws but I recon I'll go back to one at some stage.

    Anyone had a similar experience of regretting parting with a particular car?

    PS. I don't want to turn this thread into a debate about BMW versus the rest.

    you always see on forums lads saying "my old car, miss it so much", or "wish i could buy it back" and all that sort of ****. i don't wish any of my old cars back, that's why i sold them. a bit like ex girlfriends, you parted ways for a reason.

    that said, if i had to chose one. the RS Vitz, i sold it in a haste and made a bit mistake imo given what i had put into the car. when it came up for sale i offered the current owner what he paid me for it and he refused it, so i let it go, again. i would love this car back and to be honest i genuinely wish i still had it. i loved the way it drove, the way it looked, the level of spec and just how fresh it was.

    My granny bought a starlet new in 1985. Passed to my brother and then to me. Like a fool traded it in in 2001 for a diesel golf.

    1979 Merc 300TD (W123 estate). My first real car, (had a Mini before that which disintegrated after 3 weeks). Was Milan Brown, had it resprayed Signal Red, sold it to a mates mother, glad to say she still has it, it's still alive somewhere near Marseille.

    1968 Porsche 912 (4 cyl, 2.0l) . one of the most perfect hanling cars I've ever had, I had an 82 911 SC (3.0) at the same time and preferred to drive the 912.

    1985 BMW E28 524td. Superb car, had 3 of them, incredibly economical, great handling.

    1977 Merc 207 Camper. Fabulous memories and some great holidays, drove it to Mali, sold it there, last seen 10 years ago as a Bush Taxi, sad and horrible way for such a loyal friend to die.

    1989 Pug 505 GRD estate. Utterly brilliant car in every way, the only car you'll ever need.

    2001 Toyota Hiace. Incredibly reliable, I regretted selling it when the new owner was driving down the street with it.

    That's about it, lesson learnt, I own a 2001 SAAB 9-3, I know that I'll never sell it.


    And a BMW Isetta in Red and White that I forgot to mention.

    My 350z. Traded it in only a matter if weeks ago, and regretted it almost immediately. I am in the process of 'bonding' with my new car. But it's not going as smooth as one would think.

    It's got to the point where I'm looking longingly at Z's on donedeal and carzone.

    Another BMW. '94 E36 320i coupe. For what I got on the trade in, I should have kept it and parked it up doing a few jobs to it.

    i did trade it in for an Alfa so wasnt all bad (contrary to what some might think!)

    Only looking back through rose tinted glasses, I do very much miss my bmw 840ci sport! What great car to drive. The most powerful I'll drive for some time I suspect. A beautiful car to drive, to admire, to be seen in(!!!!!!!), and to own given it was and still is (the 850csi being the ultimate model of course) my dream car. However, I note rose tinted glasses because the costs of running the car were large! For the usual reasons like a growing family and sense kicking in telling me that pumping money into it all the time didn't quite make sense, I had to sell. Had it 4 years mind so had a good run.

    Driving a citroen c5 now, 08 new model. Quite the step down but a good car nonetheless however I did want a VW CC - funny you should mention In Your post op. You want to swap or sell to me?!! Hee hee.
    Anyway, nice to have had a car that you enjoyed so much but certainly with cars, it can't last forever!!!

    I used to have a Mk1 MR2 that I got rid of for family reasons - I probably couldn't have afforded to keep it at the time.

    Austin 1100. It was such a charming car; not at all "mint" but the nice comments from people would just make my day, haha. I met my now gf's parents in it too and they loved it, haha.
    I miss the car so much; saw it on Donedeal about 6 months in a sorry state and I was gutted.

    Austin Mini Van coloured the same colour yellow as a color gas cylinder.

    I regretted parting with every car I had (at the time). So much more responsibility and caution needed with a newer car when you get it first. I actually nearly cry whenever I say goodbye to any car I've owned....so yeah...I'm sad, I know.

    Slightly off topic but I looked at getting one of these about 15 years ago,( but figured the overall costs were too much, along with the fact that I'd have to borrow about 1/4 of the price off the bank and I was against that).

    I was just wondering what kinds of costs you were running into on that, (apart from insurance, tax and depreciation). What MPG did you get overall, and what were servicing/repair costs like over 4 years. Thanks.

    I still own my first car, a Micra, and have put a few quid into it over the past few months, more then I should of for a K11 but I don't intend on holding onto it that much longer. I hope to have something different by the summer if not earlier.

    However if all is okay and I don't need to pump more money into it, other then the usual service ect I will miss it when it goes because at the end of the day I reckon it will be the most reliable car that I will probably ever own and be miles ahead in terms of reliability then the balls of **** that are been produced these days. But of course most people always hold a soft spot for their first run-around.

    And believe me I was always very skeptical when it came to Micra's, when I set out to look for a car last year the first thing I said was ''no micras'' but somehow I ended up with one and in fairness I do love it. It's not the fastest, biggest or has the greatest handling but is much better than what I assumed it to be and has brought me to many parts of Ireland without fail.

    A few weeks back we moved from our first ever car which was a '99 K11 to a 2005 E90. Seeing as how the Micra was our first ever car and came at a great time in our life I didn't want to sell it on. Typically it's a car you'd buy when young but we didn't need to buy one until we bought out house in the sticks in 2011 so I bought it when 34! Rather than passing it on I've given it on an 'extended loan' to my sister who's a single mother with two kids. She has a driving licence 15 or so years but couldn't scrape the dosh together to buy a car, tax and insure it so we 'lent' her the K11 with tax paid up. The brother covered her insurance.

    So the point being (I ramble) that my first car now has a new lease of life within the family and will I hope be something I still have much later in life. It came into our life at a brilliant time and I have a certain fondness for it.

    I thought you were delighted to get rid of that bmw?

    I was delighted to get rid of the polo, although it was given to my brother so I still see it every day. Hate the blasted thing.

    With the alfas I have at the moment I can't see myself getting rid of them for a good while. Worth more to me than the 2000 they're probably worth together. I have no need to sell the 156 when the gtv goes on the road, so it'll hopefully sit on the driveway for a year. Or my luck pays off and the alfa hating father takes a liking to the gtv... :cool:

    I ended up getting a BMW 335i Auto. Don't get me wrong, it's a brilliant car and in almost every way it's superior to the 350z.

    - The n54 engine is phenomenal. The torque band is huge.
    - The interior is miles ahead of the Nissan.
    - It's stupidly fast (nearly M3 fast some say)

    But ... compared to the Z it leaves me a little cold. It's not as shouty as the Z. The exhaust note, while pleasant, is a little subdued and ... well ... boring.

    I always gauge a car by when you get out, lock the doors and walk away, do you steal one final lingering look in it's direction. And I don't just mean about how pretty the car is.

    We're still in the "getting to know each other" phase, so I hope I warm up to the BMW soon.

    My old 350z is up for sale. I traded it in to Autocentre in Newland's Cross.

    TVR was an absolute disaster -- out of the 9 months owning it, it was in the garage 6 months
    Thankfully I bought it off the BMW garage I bought the csl so they covered it under warranty

    The engine effectively seized and tried as they may, they could not fix it

    When it worked -- truly amazing car -- 4 ltr - 400 BHP - No traction control -- frightening in the wet and not for the faint hearted -- but the noise was just something else when it took off

    I decided an E90 M Sport Deisel was the sensible move (which was stolen)

    Completely, I miss my 2004 Mazda 6 1.8 petrol still to this day. I remember (foolishly) complaining about the fuel economy because I did a lot of town driving, the day before I sold it I realised it has a K&N filter which probably didn't help - a month later I moved to a new place where I didn't need to do as much town driving anymore :( If the diesel wasn't such a bad engine, I'd have one still. I got a Passat afterwards it which broke my heart, never knew of limp mode or electric issues until that came along.

    The final nail in the coffin was loosing €1250 in less than a year on it. It had all the extras too and the nice grey interior. They are so cheap now though!

    My next car will be the new shape of it, not for a while though. I love my C5, it's a dream to drive and is economical without even trying but the 6 is just sexy.

    I bought a 96spec Integra type R back in 2003. I personally imported it and kept it 4 years. I drove it as my daily driver for 2 years and then as a weekend car fir the next year and then it lay up for nearly a year being driven out if pure guilt just to keep it from seizing up. I then sold it for less than 1k less than I paid for it. It was immaculate, fault free and maintained meticulously. I sold it purely because it wasn't being used despite the fact it was mine outright and I had garage space to keep it in. As soon as the new owner drove away in it I knew I'd made a mistake. I still regret it today as there are no good ones left, in this country at least.

    Nope, never gave me any real trouble in the 3 years I owned it. I normally change my cars about every 3 years or so and given the N47 timing chain issues I felt the timing was right to part company before my fortune ran out.

    Must have picked you up wrong so, I thought that chain issue was why you were delighted to get rid of it before it went.

    I sold two cars that I regretted having done so (but I had no choice, ultimately). The one I miss the most was my E46 320i that I sold to a boardsie, I was heartbroken but had no choice as kid#3 was en route and there was no way to safely transport 3 kids in the back. I also sold my Celica(ST182) when kid #1 was en route, another gut-wrencher but the blimmin' thing had no rear seat belts at all, so there was no way to mount a child seat in the back. If there had been seatbelts there, I'd gladly have kept it, even if putting a baby in the rear of a coupé would have required an act of contortionism!

    A few years back I revamped a mk4 Festy. It had potential and I got it right, almost got it fully overhauled :)

    Sold it on for 450. I had to watch the car I spent my time on get driven into the ground and get wrecked :(:(:(

    I regret selling it to such careless people :mad:

    had a subaru legacy b4 in subaru blue , sold it because was on a split shift in work at the time and was costing me a arm and leg in fuel.. should of never of sold it .

    I've had an unending stream of utter balls of blandness, so no. I did buy an 89 carina 2 to save it from the crusher and then sold it to a friend who proceeded to lower it, repaint it and whatever - I met him driving it and it actually looked pretty damn good. I kinda went hmm.... other than that, unless carinas, mundanos, primeras and other econoboxes light your fire more than they light mine, nope. I'd love a nice car, I could afford one easily enough, but I know me too well - there'd be a panic at work, I'd throw a welder into the back seats with a load of other tools and guff, fill the boot with bolts, oils and other dirty crap and it would be wrecked in two weeks and for once I'd care. I lack panache and have come to accept it..

    My old Evo 5. One of the cleanest, and OEM one in the country. Brought it in with 12k in it with full history and a host of factory fitted ralliart extras.

    All I done to it was beef up the fueling, induction,exhaust and Remapped. 360bhp and a blast to drive.

    Wish I still had that car in the garage.

    Over the 4 years, it was around the €5-6k mark for servicing and parts alone! New exhausts required, bushes, tyres, rocker cover gaskets, new radiator, few pieces on the suspension. That was all done thro an Indy. In fairness, I'm sure things like new exhausts and radiators could have been avoided but with the age if the car etc, it was gona happen. Ah, I lived the dream for a while so happy days!!!
