CV gap

Im looking to get a bit of a partnership going and they want to see my CV.

Now Im thinking. I have a 2 year gap where I was working alright. But it was cash in hand. How do I write that down?

Secondly one of the bigger companies I worked for (and I kinda have to put it down as its where I did some of my best work) it was about 6-7 years ago and I was only subcontracted in 4 or 5 times a year when there was a huge job on.

That manager from then is long gone hes away off in china now or somewhere. The only other person there in that company Id say that would know me would be the guy that owns it and theres no point in even putting him down because 1) Hes the hardest man in the country to get a hold off and 2) if they did somehow manage to get hold of him I doubt he'd remember me by name.

I cant just not put the company down. But at the same time I dont want them to call up asking and the girl on the phone to say "no hes never worked here" and they'll think Im a liar.

    You're overthinking this.

    First issue:
Don't mention the job was cash in hand. If they bring it up somehow, you can mention it then.

    Second issue:
This is normal. Everyone has this problem. If I were you I'd contact the HR person (in the 6 - 7 years ago company) now to tell them to expect a reference check. At least they will be aware of you and can find your old HR record if it still exists.

For CV purposes, cash-in-hand is irrelevant: people want to know what you did, not what your contractual arrangements were.

But if you were sub-contracting, rather than working for <big company> - then I'd advise making this clear; eg self-employed (or working for Agency X), on site for <big company>.

The fact that your main referee is now in China is irrelevant. They have phones and email even in China, and if he really is a referee he will be contactable.
