Hi if someone could please give me some advise I would appreciate it.

My father is working for a security company the last 3 months ( usually 3-4 days of 12 hours shifts.) This is not a permanent or full time job he is a temporary worker. They no longer have work close to home so they have him travelling 3 hours away which they supply bed and breakfast. He has to guard empty buildings so usually means sitting in his car for 12 hours. Now he was due to work Fri/ Sat/Sun this week and he presumed the same for next week. They just rang to advise him that he has to be at work on Friday at 7am until Friday week 27th, with no guarantee of a B&B over the the Christmas days. So basically he will be working 7 days in a row,12 hour days and maybe living out of his car ( over Xmas). Their response when he sounded shocked was " take it up with our complaints department". Now my question really is can you say no? What are rights for temporary employers? I presume this must be illegal. He is frightened that they will sack him if he refuses? He has no problem working some of the days but not 7 days straight and missing all of Xmas

    Thanks in advance

    J

My opinion is that such a situation breaches many many regulations but as a temp contract worker-he has no rights. So the work they had for him finished and they're sending him miles away - thats prob costing them too much so if they can get anyone nearer-your Dad will be out of work
    I'd refuse and see what happens . . .

It would really depend on the pro-rata time off in lieu. For example, in nursing, it is often standard practice to work 7 nights on (12hrs) with 7 nights off. In any 24/7/365 occupation the fact that it is Christmas time is irrelevant.

I wouldn't say that the fact it is Xmas time is irrelevant to the security industry as I'm getting 34-40 hours of security on 7 different sites when we would normally have none. I think what would be more important is that Xmas might be considered peak season in the industry.
