I am getting 12.6 download and .64 upload with Eircom. Is it worth switching to e-fibre? What could I do that I can't do now?

Well wouldn't you switch, you will get speeds potentially 10 times faster for the exact same price!!

One major improvement would be your upload speed. Your upload speed is quiet slow, which would make uploading pictures, videos, etc. to facebook/youtube painful.

You could also make use of cloud backup services to backup your PC.

Your download speed is probably ok for you for the time being. But again the upgrade is free!!

You will be signing up to a new 18 month contract with your telco but if you are not going to be moving within that time then you would be mad not to get it.

you could have at least be looking to have download speeds of up to 70MB and upload speeds of up to 20MB with fiber

all depends on how close to the cabinet you are as to the speeds you will see, are there any new green ones close to you? if so rough estimate of how far?

they are normally placed next to or near the old larger cab (right hand side) the vdsl one is the one on left

im not with eircom but i use the same product and am close to 1000m from my cab and sync lines at 50174 Kbps download / 20479 Kbps upload

speeds i normally get are between 40-48mb

Cabinets about 200 metres by road, closer in straight line.

youll sync at 70/20 so and you can expect roughly 65-70mb download with 18-20mb upload

It's definitely worth it. No question about it. You'll get the same speeds for the same price and files/data are/is getting larger, so you'll need more speed to download them.

I'm not sure whether you upload much, but my upload is .56 and I've been dying for more upload speed since 2007.

The op's question is a bit like saying "I've a Fiesta & have been offered a Ferarri for free with the same running costs as the Fiesta, should I take the Ferarri?"

As soon as Fibre was available in my area,I got it.There's a world of difference in the speed.

Just no comparison, even if you're not all that close to the cabinet.

It means being able to use dropbox and all those cloud services properly and being able to send a huge email attachment in seconds instead of minutes.

My ping time and stability improved dramatically too which means I can use Blueface VoIP as my phone phone line and I seem to be actually getting better audio quality than I was with the old POTS line.

Also, for things like streaming television e.g. Sky on demand, you can just start watching a box set programme in HD without having to wait more than maybe 30 seconds to start.

Ok, I'm convinced - obvious really. Thanks for all the input. Looking forward to the improvement.

One other point for anyone asking the same question.

These cabinets have capacity for 192 lines. Once this fills up, there is no guarantee Eircom will put a second cab in, so you then might end up stuck with slower speeds, even as file sizes and new higher bandwidth services arrive.

That's a point although, they would seem to be quite keen to migrate everyone and adding a supplementary cabinet isn't that expensive as the wiring for power and ducting is in place.

I would suspect that they've relatively low like density in a lot of areas. Although in towns without UPC uptake could be very high compared to areas that have seen a lot of people move to cable.

One would hope they don't start saying 'cabinet full' to people though.

What would make more sense would be to try and 'deepen' the fibre by adding smaller cabinets close to end users. There's probably scope to take even smaller cabinets into individual streets and smaller housing estates that arent getting very high speeds due to being a little too far away.

There are tiny pole mounted or vault based DSLAMs available at this stage for that purpose.
