Recovering contacts from Mac to iPhone?

Yesterday I plugged my iPhone into my work PC (for the first time) to charge it. It came up with a message about trusting the computer so it could access my photos, so I thought "no harm" and allowed it. I noticed this morning that all but about 10 of my contacts are now missing from the phone. There's no discernable order to what's left either. Some numbers were added years ago, some in the last month.

I keep the phone backed up to my macbook so I figured I'd just restore the backup and all would be right with the world once more. Unfortunately, the first thing iTunes did when I plugged the phone in was to take a backup (as I had it set up to do, D'oh!) so if I choose to back up the phone now, it will be exactly the same.

All of my contacts are still in the Contacts app on the MBP. I never deliberately put them there so they must have come over the cloud or something. I can't see any obvious way to transfer contacts from Mac to phone, either directly or via the cloud.

Can anyone offer any advice please?

Pretty sure you can restore from an older backup in iTunes.
