I have nice 5 month old pup dog.He is showing some good signs he like a live wire very bold.I am wondering what should I start doing with a lad like this he very keen.
He has nose on the ground all the time and always in and out of hedges and when a bird leaves a tree or hedge he goes running after it he very observant.Question is whats the best time to start training this wee boy?????Cheers

Imo I'd start him sitting staying and coming back to the whistle now.its just the foundation for everything else..it will pay off once you get him down to serious work.

Deffo do that but my thinking here is that i mite let him go another bit let be to his instinct then start the manners part he stil young and different people often said that from 9 months on start the basic let them be pups.Just keep them active and playing with the ball for retriving hard to know but for hunting this boy showing goo signs he very alert and nose to the ground non stop.Im liking these signs in him.

I have a 5 month lab bitch coming on at the min.I know people say bitches learn quicker than dogs but I think a dog comes on depending on training.I have the pup sitting and staying up to 20 yards which I consider to be good so far.I train the pup around play.as in I try to train the pup around play.using the nose, retrieving and dropping to hand, walking to heel.at a young age the best thing is make everything feel like fun and a game

I agree totally I have trained a few dogs before the last was a springer dog pup as well but i had doing everything like you had and he was doing all but hadnt the drive in him like this boy this boy does be bouncing which i like.I had my the last pup trained very well all the basics that you need in a gun dog sit stay return stop retrive to the shot but he didnt have the drive like this lad.I sold him to local boy who is more than happy with him and has shot plenty with him so it all depends on the type you have this boy is a real live wire .The last boy was just a bit shy but turned out good.So with the pup i have now i was thinking let him be for another while then introduce him to the basics
    ???

Well you could if you wanted.I suppose he'd be hard enough train.or it could be as easy as walking him for half hour to burn energy before training sessions

DON'T what ever you do do to much with him to young you could take some drive out of him or he will be always looking at you for command.just do the bare basics sit stay heel and steady to dummy.let him run wild a a bit you can tidy him up later.around 9 months he should be ready for advanced training.ie heavy cover steady to shot drop to shot if you want to go that far in training.best of look.its nice to get a dog with decent drive.
