As many vehicles are now supplied without a spare wheel but with a tin of sealer and a mini compressor, it would look like having a spare wheel is not a requirement.

Remember though, if you have a spare wheel is must have the required thread depth, have a suitable load rating for the vehicle and not over the age limit.

A person should also check how not having a spare wheel could affect the type of response you get if you do get a puncture and you need roadside assistance.
Also a tin of sealer and a compressor is of little use if the sidewall is damaged.

I think what he is saying is his spare is borderline, if he leaves it at home for the test, will the lack of it fail the van. The answer is no.

Will van fail for date code on tyres if they are in good condition?

I think the date is just an advisory

Checking the manufactured date is not listed as an item to be checked, so it is irrelevant to the tester.

However, there are age related defects which a tyre can be suffering from which are listed for checking and these can result in a fail if present.
