Twin block brace??

I'm 17 and have had braces for 8 months, I have an overbite and jet and my orthodontist initially told me that jaw surgery or extractions were my options to fix my overbite however I don't have the money for surgery so extractions would suit, however now he mentioned that he might use a twin block brace which I really really do not want! I was wondering if the retainer would even work because I'm nearly 18 and I was told beforehand they effective on children up to about 14. Any advice would really be appreciated and was wondering would extractions work too?

A twin block could work but very difficult to adapt to at your age, there are less bulky appliances but considerably more expensive, extractions generally can work to make your teeth nice and straight but a lot of dentists (myself included)feel that they effect your facial profile negatively, amongst other disadvantages. On the other hand a lot of others dentists would disagree with that viewpoint.

Getting a second opinion is often a good idea, and dentists dont mind that at all. Why no go to another orthodontist of Dentist with an interest in orthodontics for an opinion? .

Would the brace be my only option bar surgery at this point to fix my overbite? I would actually rather wear headgear at night than that retainer during the day! I already have braces on would they put the retainer over the brace?

    .

This is almost too technical to answer on a forum but there are far less bulky appliances than twin blocks available that are fixed in your mouth, google "class 11 correction" and u might get an idea, they won't come cheaply,

That would be a question for your orthodontist. I assume the treatment plan and sequence was explained to you prior to starting.

Why don't you want the twin blocks?
    Just out of interest

Hazarding a guess, probably because as ortho appliances go, they're clunky& socially awkward.

OP, if you want the optimal outcome then you need to follow your treatment plan to the letter. That or else change orthodontist (though there's no guarantee their treatment plan won't be the same).
If you were seeing a doctor to have your spine or a limb straightened, would you approach them saying "Can we just skip part of the treatment there? I'm not a fan". OR would you figure, short term pain for long term gain, there's method to the madness, roll with the experts?
