Mondeo temp reading low

I noticed today my temp gauge was reading less than usual. I haven't had the car long and I always thought the cab heater wasn't great. Could this point to a water pump failing? I would have thought I would get an over heating problem if that was the case. Or am I looking at a new thermostat? Think it's common enough on the Mk3 mondeo.

    What engine?

    1.8 petrol

It's probably the thermostat. They are a scandalous price as well. They are not your usual thermostat that you buy for a tenner. It comes as a complete housing. Not easy to fit either.

Yeah e103 from micksgarage but e27 off eBay. I'll keep an eye on it. It's mostly ok though. So they are difficult to fit?

They are fiddly to do. They are on the front of the engine below the power steering pump and access isn't great.

Does the coolant need to be drained to do it or do you loose much at all?

You will lose a fair bit of it alright. You would need about 1.5-2 litres of concentrated coolant to replace what is lost. Obviously more than that if you are buying ready mixed coolant.

I see. I don't see how they can be e70 cheaper on eBay. Looks like the same part to me

I'd be concerned about the quality of the cheaper part to be honest. The genuine Ford part is €175 plus VAT so €100 from micksgarage is already half price!

Not sure if its the same with the petrols as it is with the diesels but my mk3 tdci was reading low on the gauge even after a new thermostat.
After a lot of looking on forums I found out there was a second thermostat in the oil cooler. Replaced that and it was perfect.
The main thermostat was different to the one George is describing for your car though.

Yeah I read about that too. Is that one as expensive?

The petrol engine doesn't have that second thermostat like the diesel models do.

Think it was about 30 quid

Well one less thing to worry about. Could just be a sticky thermostat. I've only noticed it reading low a couple of times. But I'll change it in the new year if it persists.

Just an update if anyone is having similar trouble. New thermostat fixed the problem. Wasn't the easiest to fit but fairly straight forward. Now the temp gauge is right in the middle and the heater is much warmer!

Reading less than usual - what do you mean by that? Is it spot on or below?
Just asking, because if you make only short trips, the fact we have around 0 degrees may have some impact on how the engine warms up.
Water pump fail would cause an overheating very quickly. Thermostat could be a reason here. Is water level adequate - did you need to top it up recently? Is the heating working ok?

Nevermind, didn't see the OP fixed it. I am an idiot

Just to clarify it was always reading less than normal when driving. If in traffic it would climb back up but still not to the middle of the gauge. It works perfectly now, gauge sits right in the middle
